Job Purpose
This role is responsible for supporting the recruitment and engagement of editors and editorial boards, contributing to the long-term growth and stability of the Gold Open Access journal portfolio. The position requires close collaboration with Journal Managers and the Commissioning Team, as well as in-depth research to identify journal needs, structure journals into sections, and recruit qualified Associate Editors, Section Editors, Editorial Board Members, and Editorial Review Board Members. The role also focuses on developing streamlined, scalable processes to strengthen editorial board management and engagement.
Key Accountabilities
- Collaborate with Journal Managers across a diverse portfolio to map journal sections,
assess recruitment needs, and align editorial board recruitment with overall journal strategy.
- Identify and research potential Associate Editors (AEs) and Section Editors (SEs), prepare vetted candidate profiles, and coordinate onboarding by arranging meetings with Journal Managers.
- Research and profile candidates for Editorial Board Members (EBMs) and Editorial Review Board Members (ERBs); share vetted lists with Journal Managers and support invitations via the Assistant Editor.
- Track recruitment progress and monitor editorial board composition across assigned journals.
- Partner with the Commissioning Team to ensure recruitment efforts complement article acquisition and special collection development.
- Develop workflows to transition engaged authors and reviewers into editorial or board positions.
- Support the Head of Research Community Engagement in refining recruitment and engagement strategies, enhancing editorial involvement in peer review and journal development.
- Provide feedback on editorial management systems, working with technology teams to improve tracking,
reporting, and recruitment workflows through automation and process optimization.
- Deliver regular progress reports on recruitment activities, challenges, and achievements, contributing insights to shape broader editorial board initiatives.
Skills, Qualifications & Experience
- Graduate degree in a biomedical, engineering, or physical science discipline.
- Experience in journal publishing, ideally in an Open Access environment, with knowledge of editorial board recruitment and engagement strategies.
- Strong communication, organizational, and prioritization skills with proven adaptability.
- Project management experience, with the ability to quickly grasp current scientific concepts across multiple subject areas.
- Problem-solving mindset with experience in process improvement and workflow optimization.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and comfort with adopting new systems and technologies.
