The incumbent will develop and lead IRRI’s R4D program on innovative crop and natural resource management approaches for sustainable intensification of rice-based cropping systems in South Asia. In addition to strong theoretical knowledge of agricultural systems, the ideal candidate will have a mix of practical field skills, quantitative abilities, appreciation of inter-disciplinary work, and a core commitment to achieving science-led agricultural development. The major R4D focus of his or her work would be around the following key thematic areas:



Sustainable intensification of rice-based cropping systems for rainfed and irrigated environments through cropping system design/optimization to build resilience,

enhance profitability and permit diversification

Developing sustainable crop management practices for abiotic stress management/landraces using G x E x M approach

Resource-efficient sustainable alternatives to puddled transplanted rice, farm mechanization, and service economy in a range of target environments to address drivers of change including labor and water shortage, rising cost of cultivation and to adapt and mitigate climate change

Data and agro-advisory ecosystem with a sustainable landscape-oriented decision framework for evidence-based advisory systems leading to precision crop management

Contextualize research across multiple spatial and temporal scales while incorporating knowledge of contemporary and future drivers of change.

Develop new research questions that address core knowledge gaps, often by leveraging newer and emerging methods, including modern analytics and geospatial analysis.

Contribute to establishing a state-of-the-art R4D facilities for Agronomy at IRRI South Asia Regional Centre (ISARC) in Varanasi

Contribute to the development of innovation alliances with a diverse set of public and private sector partners, including advanced research

Sharing key results by publishing in peer-refereed international journals or national/international workshops/conferences.



He/she will work closely with an interdisciplinary team of social scientists/gender specialist, economists, GIS/remote sensing experts, breeders, soil/agronomist, and policy analysts to understand adoption processes, technology targeting, and the enabling environment to support sustainable intensification at scale. He/she will have clear focus on science-led agricultural development, scale, sustainability and underlying processes. He/she will conceptualize and mobilize resources for R4D program aligned with goals and objectives of IRRI’s and One-CGIAR.



This position will be based at IRRI South Asia Regional Center (ISARC), Varanasi, India and is open for international applications.



Roles and Responsibilities

Develop and promote research on the following themes (1) Sustainable intensification of rice-based cropping systems for rainfed and irrigated environments through cropping system design/optimization to build resilience, enhance profitability and permit diversification (2) sustainable crop management practices for abiotic stress prone areas and for specialty rices (landraces/healthier rice) by harnessing G x E x M opportunities offered by stress-tolerant varieties and improved landraces/specialty rice varieties to improve productivity and profitability of rainfed rice-based systems by developing tailored agronomy, (3) Resource-efficient alternatives to puddled transplanted rice, farm mechanization, and service economy to support sustainable intensification in a range of target environments, (4) Data and agro-advisory ecosystem with a sustainable landscape-oriented decision

Contextualize research across multiple spatial and temporal scales while incorporating knowledge of contemporary and future drivers of change

Develop new research questions that address core knowledge gaps, often by leveraging newer and emerging methods, including modern analytics and geospatial analysis leading to precision agronomy

Contribute to establishing R4D facilities for Agronomy under BPRP at ISARC with state-of-the-art research farm and lab facilities to act as a Knowledge Centre and perform interdisciplinary-problem-driven research

Contribute to the conceptualization and mobilization of resources for the R4D program that is aligned with the goals and objectives of IRRI and One-CGIAR.

Contribute in the development of strategic partnerships, knowledge sharing, and capacity development of various stakeholders.

Work closely with social scientists/gender specialist, economists, GIS/remote sensing experts, breeders, soil/agronomist, and policy analysts to understand adoption processes, technology targeting, and the enabling environment to support sustainable intensification at scale

Nurture and initiate collaboration with NARES partners, private sector and development partners, advanced research institutions (ARI) and policy makers in South Asia and conduct joint research.

Collaborate with government, donors, rice R&D; partners, private enterprises to align with client and donor expectations;

Communicate key messages and project progress with donors, policymakers, and other primary stakeholders.

Coordinate closely with project partners and build a relationship with other stakeholders to ensure research outputs are transferred effectively

Publish and actively contribute to articles in peer-reviewed journals that highlight findings from research and experiment activities showcasing the institute’s scientific leadership

Supervise, coach and mentor scientific staff and students towards research excellence and integrity, professional conscientiousness and drive and career orientation and opportunities

Actively seek external funds and secure partnerships for research and development

Represent IRRI to a wide audience by presenting at international conferences/meetings

Contribute actively to the strategic planning of the research agenda of the research cluster/platform/ISARC.

Qualifications

PhD in agronomy or related fields with at least 3+ years post-PhD experience in the field of agronomy and related fields

Strong background in field-oriented research and extension activities

Have a mix of practical field skills, quantitative abilities, appreciation of inter-disciplinary work, and a core commitment to achieving science-led agricultural development

Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills

Strong proficiency in written and spoken English

Experience working in a developing country
