ROLE OVERVIEW
We are hiring an Engineering Lead to become the technical backbone of our engineering team. You will design and build scalable backend and data systems, own delivery end-to-end, and mentor a small team of engineers and interns. You work directly with our fractional CTO and report to the Founder/CEO.

This is a fully hands-on role at a quick-moving startup. You need to be comfortable operating in ambiguity, owning outcomes (not just tasks), and building things that did not exist before. Engineers from large enterprises who need fully defined specs and large support teams will not thrive here.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
Design and own real-time data pipelines that ingest telematics and sensor streams from medium and heavy-duty fleet vehicles.
Build and maintain scalable backend services processing high-frequency time-series data reliably in production.
Drive DevOps practices: CI/CD pipelines, Docker-based deployments, infrastructure automation, and monitoring.
Lead integrations with telematics and maintenance platforms and third-party APIs.
Collaborate with the ML team to productionize predictive models and automate maintenance alert pipelines.
Mentor engineers on code quality, design standards, and engineering practices; own sprint planning and technical roadmap with the CTO.
Reduce onboarding time for new fleet customers from days to hours through platform automation and stability improvements.

WHO YOU ARE
10+ years of hands-on systems or backend engineering experience, with at least 3 years in a senior or lead role.
Strong systems thinker: you reason about distributed systems, failure modes,



and scalability trade-offs naturally.
Proficient in Python (primary) plus at least one of Go, Rust, or Java; comfortable picking up new languages fast.
Solid command of databases and queuing systems: PostgreSQL (or equivalent RDBMS), Kafka or similar message brokers.
Hands-on with containerization and deployment: Docker, CI/CD, and cloud infrastructure (AWS / GCP / Azure).
Experience with workflow orchestration tools (Prefect, Airflow, or equivalent) is a strong advantage.
Proven ability to build and ship real-time or near-real-time data pipelines from scratch, not just maintain existing ones.
Comfortable in a startup: ambiguity does not slow you down, and you set the pace rather than wait for it.

NICE-TO-HAVE
Background in IoT, telematics, vehicle data, or any domain with high-frequency sensor or streaming data (such as industrial, logistics, fintech).
Experience building integrations with third party APIs.
Familiarity with ML model deployment, time-series analysis, or anomaly detection pipelines.
Prior experience running technical hiring or mentoring junior engineers through steep learning curves.
