Software Engineering Manager

Job Purpose

The Software Engineering Manager is responsible for leading multiple software engineering teams delivering enterprise-scale digital platforms, platform services, and business-critical applications. This role provides technical, people, and delivery leadership while driving the design, development, deployment, and operation of scalable cloud-native solutions.

The incumbent will play a key role in advancing Caterpillars digital transformation through the development of reusable platform services, AI-enabled automation capabilities, and modern software engineering practices. The position is accountable for building high-performing teams, driving engineering excellence, and enabling the delivery of secure, resilient, and scalable digital products.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Leadership

- Lead multiple Agile software engineering teams delivering enterprise-scale digital platforms and products.
- Build, coach, mentor, and retain high-performing engineering talent.
- Establish engineering best practices, technical standards, and software development governance.
- Drive a culture of innovation, accountability, operational excellence, and continuous improvement.

Platform Services Architecture

- Lead the design and development of reusable Platform Services that enable rapid product development across business domains.
- Drive platform engineering initiatives including API platforms, integration services, shared services, developer platforms, and self-service capabilities.
- Partner with Product Owners and Architects to define platform roadmaps and long-term technology strategies.
- Promote Platform-as-a-Product principles focused on adoption, reliability, scalability, and reusability.

Software Development Technical Leadership

- Provide technical leadership for enterprise applications built using Java and Python technologies.
- Guide software architecture decisions involving microservices, event-driven architectures, distributed systems, and cloud-native design patterns.
- Drive engineering excellence through CI/CD, automated testing, code quality, observability, and DevSecOps practices.
- Ensure solutions meet enterprise standards for security, availability, maintainability,



and performance.

Cloud Platform Engineering

- Lead development and deployment of solutions on AWS cloud platforms.
- Drive adoption of cloud-native technologies including containers, Kubernetes, serverless, API management, and event streaming services.
- Partner with Infrastructure, Security, DevOps, and Architecture teams to improve platform reliability and operational efficiency.
- Support modernization and migration initiatives to cloud-based architectures.

AI Automation Engineering Productivity

- Drive implementation of AI-powered engineering automation capabilities.
- Leverage AI and GenAI technologies to improve software delivery, code generation, testing, quality engineering, operational support, and developer productivity.
- Identify opportunities for intelligent automation across engineering and platform operations processes.
- Champion modern AI-assisted software engineering practices and innovation initiatives.

Stakeholder Delivery Management

- Partner with Product Management, Architecture, Business, and Operations teams to deliver strategic outcomes.
- Manage engineering roadmaps, budgets, staffing plans, risks, and dependencies.
- Communicate delivery progress, technical strategy, and operational metrics to leadership stakeholders.
- Ensure successful execution of large-scale, multi-team programs and initiatives.

Required Qualifications

- Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field.
- 14+ years of software engineering experience.
- 5+ years of experience leading software engineering teams and engineering managers.
- Proven experience building and scaling enterprise Platform Services, Platform Products, Shared Services, or Digital Platforms.
- Strong hands-on software engineering background using Java and Python.




- 5+ years of experience designing and delivering solutions on AWS Cloud.
- Experience with microservices, APIs, distributed systems, event-driven architectures, and cloud-native development.
- Experience with DevOps, CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, observability, and Site Reliability Engineering practices.
- Experience driving enterprise-scale Agile delivery programs.
- Robust people leadership, coaching, and talent development capabilities.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience delivering Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Industrial IoT, Data Platform, or Enterprise Platform solutions.
- Experience with Platform Engineering, DataOps, DevOps, AIOps, and MLOps operating models.
- Experience with Kafka, Spark, Kubernetes, Docker, Snowflake, Databricks, or similar modern platform technologies.
- Experience implementing AI/GenAI-powered automation solutions for software engineering or operations.
- Experience leading globally distributed engineering teams and vendor partners.
- Knowledge of AWS Well-Architected Framework and cloud security best practices.
- Experience building internal developer platforms or engineering enablement capabilities.
