Role & responsibilities

We are looking for a seasoned BI Technical Lead who brings deep hands-on expertise across the full enterprise BI reporting landscape Power BI, Tableau, IBM Cognos, MicroStrategy (MSTR), and Qlik. This is not a single-platform role. The ideal candidate has worked extensively across at least three of these platforms and has led or delivered BI migration projects where reports, data models, and semantic layers were re-platformed from one BI tool to another.

The BI Technical Lead will work across multiple client engagements simultaneously, providing technical leadership on report development, BI architecture, migration assessment, and delivery governance. You will mentor junior developers, conduct technical reviews, interface with client data and BI teams, and own the end-to-end quality of BI deliverables across your engagements.

Preferred candidate profile

BI Report Development & Architecture

- Design and develop enterprise BI reports, dashboards, and analytical solutions across Power BI, Tableau, Cognos, MSTR, and Qlik
- Build and maintain semantic layers, data models (star schema, snowflake, composite models), and reusable report components
- Write complex DAX measures, Power Query M transformations, Tableau LOD expressions, Cognos calculations, and MSTR metrics
- Implement Row-Level Security (RLS), Object-Level Security (OLS), and platform-specific access control across BI tools
- Optimise report and dashboard performance: query folding, aggregations, incremental refresh, DirectQuery tuning, extract optimisation
- Design paginated reports, pixel-perfect layouts, and scheduled distribution (bursting) as required by client specifications
- Review and maintain data source connections: DirectQuery, live connection, import mode, OLAP cubes, and flat file sources

BI Migration (Core Responsibility)

- Lead end-to-end BI migration engagements: Cognos Power BI, Tableau Power BI, MSTR Power BI, Qlik Power BI / Tableau
- Conduct migration assessment and inventory: catalogue existing reports, classify by complexity, estimate migration effort, identify gaps
- Translate source-tool logic to target-tool equivalents: LOD DAX, Cognos FM Power BI semantic model, MSTR schema DAX objects, set analysis CALCULATE
- Define and execute migration playbooks: wave planning, phased delivery, UAT support, cutover, and decommissioning
- Leverage and contribute to Codehives proprietary AIVizMigrate platform for automated migration acceleration
- Identify reports that require manual redesign vs. those eligible for automated or assisted migration
- Document migration decisions, technical debt, and known differences between source and target report behaviour

3. BI Architecture & Governance

- Design the target-state BI architecture: platform selection rationale, data model standards, semantic layer strategy, naming conventions
- Establish BI development standards: folder structures, naming conventions, documentation templates, version control (Git for BI assets)
- Define and implement BI governance frameworks: report certification, lineage tracking, usage monitoring, deprecation workflows
- Evaluate and recommend BI platform strategy: when to use Power BI vs. Tableau vs.



Cognos for specific use cases
- Advise on cloud BI deployment: Microsoft Fabric, Power BI Premium, Tableau Cloud, Qlik Cloud
- Conduct BI landscape assessments for current clients: current-state analysis, gap identification, roadmap recommendations

4. Technical Leadership & Client Engagement

- Lead a team of 38 BI developers across one or more engagements; assign work, review deliverables, unblock issues
- Conduct daily stand-ups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives; maintain velocity and quality standards
- Run client workshops: requirements gathering, prototype reviews, UAT walkthroughs, go-live readiness assessments
- Prepare and present technical documentation: design specifications, migration assessment reports, architecture decision records
- Serve as the primary BI technical point of contact for client stakeholders (data engineers, BI teams, business analysts, CXOs)
- Mentor junior and mid-level BI developers; conduct code reviews, provide platform-specific training as needed
- Escalate delivery risks and scope changes to the Engagement Lead or Delivery Manager with clear impact assessments

5. Data Layer & Integration

- Write advanced SQL and T-SQL for stored procedures, views, CTEs, and query optimisation underlying BI reports
- Work with data engineering teams on data pipeline design, data warehouse modelling, and ETL/ELT dependencies
- Understand and work with cloud data platforms: Azure Synapse, Azure SQL, Snowflake, Databricks, AWS Redshift, BigQuery
- Configure data refresh schedules, gateway management, incremental loads, and partition strategies
- Profile data quality issues and recommend cleansing / transformation rules upstream of the BI layer
