Company Description
Sumatak Technologies is a software development startup that specializes in creating creative products and solutions using AI and ML. We aim to solve real-world challenges across industries such as accessibility, cybersecurity, and more.
We are building the automated web-accessibility auditing platform. We're hiring our in-house part time PDF accessibility expert to manually audit websites against WCAG 2.2, IS 17802. You'll work on real PDFs and exported documents with NVDA/JAWS and keyboard-only testing, write precise findings tied to success criteria and matterhorn checkpoints, and work directly with our product team to make automated document accessibility better for everyone.
You bring: 3+ years of hands-on PDF accessibility remediation, deep PDF/UA and WCAG 2.2 knowledge, screen-reader fluency (NVDA/JAWS), and tagged-PDF structure expertise. IAAP CPACC/WAS and lived AT experience are big pluses.
What you'll do
- Remediate and validate PDFs and exported documents by hand against PDF/UA (ISO 14289) and WCAG 2.2 (A/AA/AAA), IS 17802 etc. Tag trees and structure hierarchy, reading order, alternate text, tagged tables (header scope, spanning cells), tagged forms (AcroForm fields, labels, tooltips), lists, headings, language, bookmarks, and accessible math (MathML / spoken equations).
- Validate engine output. Spot-check the accessible documents and findings our engine produces, confirm or reject them, and characterize where automated export and remediation diverge from expert judgment.
- Write clear, actionable findings. Each issue: what's broken, which success criterion or Matterhorn checkpoint, who it affects (e.g. blind, low-vision, motor, cognitive), and how to fix it in the tag structure.
- Partner with the product and engineering teams to feed your findings back into improving the export/remediation engine and reporting.
- Deliver client-facing accessible documents and conformance reports (PDF/UA statements, VPATs) as we onboard customers.
Basic Qualifications
- 3+ years doing manual PDF accessibility remediation (not just running automated checkers).
- Deep, working knowledge of PDF/UA (ISO 14289) and WCAG 2.2 success criteria. You can cite the checkpoint or SC behind a finding and explain the failure.
- Hands-on fluency with screen readers reading PDFs: NVDA and JAWS at minimum; VoiceOver a plus.
- Experience building and repairing tag trees, setting reading order, and remediating tagged tables, forms, and lists (Acrobat Pro tag/reading-order tools or equivalent).
- Keyboard-only testing and focus-order analysis for tagged forms and interactive PDFs.
- Familiarity with IS 17802 (Indian standard).
- Ability to write precise, reproducible issue reports.
Nice to Have
- IAAP certification (CPACC and/or WAS).
- Lived experience as an assistive-technology user, or extensive testing with users with disabilities.
- PDF/UA conformance statement or VPAT / Accessibility Conformance Report authoring experience.
- Experience with PAC (PDF Accessibility Checker), Acrobat Pro Accessibility Checker, or equivalent validation tooling.
- Familiarity with accessible math (MathML, tagged equations) and complex document structures (multi-column, footnotes, figures).
- Experience with source-to-PDF export pipelines (InDesign, Word, LaTeX) and how tagging survives export.
- Comfort reading document structure / the PDF tag tree and using accessibility tree inspectors.
- Experience evaluating or QA-ing an automated accessibility or document-remediation tool.
