Department: Production / Surface Finishing

Reports To: Production Manager / Operations Manager

Location: Manufacturing Plant

Job Summary

The Paint Booth & Powder Coating Specialist is responsible for managing all activities related to pretreatment, powder coating, liquid painting, curing, quality inspection, maintenance of the paint booth, and ensuring compliance with safety, environmental, and customer quality requirements. The role ensures high-quality surface finishing while optimizing productivity, reducing defects, and maintaining statutory compliance.

Roles & Responsibilities1. Production Operations

- Plan and execute daily powder coating and liquid painting activities.
- Ensure production targets are achieved as per the production plan.
- Monitor paint booth utilization and equipment efficiency.
- Coordinate with Production, PPC, and Dispatch teams.
- Ensure proper loading and unloading of components.
- Maintain optimum line speed and process flow.
- Minimize downtime during production.

2. Pretreatment Process

- Ensure proper cleaning, degreasing, rinsing, phosphating, and drying.
- Monitor pretreatment chemical concentrations.
- Maintain pH, conductivity, temperature, and TDS levels.
- Ensure proper water quality before coating.
- Monitor chemical consumption.
- Coordinate with chemical suppliers for process optimization.

3. Powder Coating Process

- Select the correct powder according to customer specifications.
- Set appropriate electrostatic gun parameters.
- Maintain coating thickness within specified limits.
- Monitor transfer efficiency.
- Ensure proper grounding of components.
- Optimize powder recovery and recycling.
- Prevent contamination and color mixing.
- Control powder consumption.

4. Liquid Paint Booth Operations

- Operate spray guns and paint booths.
- Maintain air pressure and paint viscosity.
- Monitor humidity and booth temperature.
- Ensure proper flash-off time.
- Maintain clean spray booth conditions.
- Ensure proper paint mixing as per TDS.
- Reduce overspray and paint wastage.

5. Oven & Curing Process

- Monitor curing oven temperatures.
- Verify curing time as per paint specifications.
- Perform oven temperature mapping.
- Ensure complete curing of powder and liquid paint.




- Maintain conveyor speed.
- Record curing parameters.

6. Quality Control

- Inspect coated components before dispatch.
- Check:
- Film thickness
- Gloss level
- Surface finish
- Color matching
- Adhesion
- Impact resistance
- Scratch resistance
- Salt spray performance (where applicable)
- Conduct cross-hatch adhesion tests.
- Perform curing tests.
- Maintain inspection records.

7. Defect Analysis

Identify and eliminate defects such as:

- Orange peel
- Pinholes
- Blisters
- Runs and sags
- Dry spray
- Fish eyes
- Cratering
- Poor adhesion
- Shade variation
- Uneven thickness
- Powder back ionization
- Dust contamination

Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.

8. Equipment Maintenance

Maintain:

- Paint booth
- Powder booth
- Spray guns
- Powder recovery cyclone
- Cartridge filters
- Air compressor
- Air dryers
- Curing oven
- Conveyor system
- Dust collectors
- Air balancing systems

Coordinate preventive maintenance activities.

9. Safety Responsibilities

- Ensure proper use of PPE.
- Monitor ventilation systems.
- Ensure explosion-proof electrical fittings.
- Handle paints and chemicals safely.
- Maintain Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS/SDS).
- Conduct safety inspections.
- Ensure fire extinguishers are available and functional.
- Prevent ignition sources inside the booth.

10. Environmental Compliance

- Ensure compliance with Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) requirements.
- Operate the ETP for paint-related wastewater.
- Maintain hazardous waste records.
- Ensure proper disposal of paint sludge.
- Monitor VOC emissions.
- Control dust emissions.
- Maintain environmental monitoring records.

11. Documentation

Maintain records of:

- Daily production
- Powder consumption
- Paint consumption
- Chemical consumption
- Oven temperature logs
- Pretreatment parameters
- Inspection reports
- Defect analysis
- Rework records
- Maintenance logs

12. Cost Control

- Reduce powder wastage.
- Improve transfer efficiency.
- Minimize paint losses.
- Reduce rework and rejection.
- Improve first-pass yield.
- Control energy consumption.
- Optimize compressed air usage.

13. Continuous Improvement

- Implement Lean Manufacturing practices.
- Apply 5S in the paint shop.
- Reduce changeover time.
- Improve Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).
- Lead Kaizen initiatives.
- Standardize painting processes.
- Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

14. Team Management

- Train paint operators.
- Evaluate operator skills.
- Monitor attendance and discipline.
- Allocate manpower efficiently.
- Conduct daily production meetings.
- Ensure adherence to work instructions.

- Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Production, Chemical, Metallurgical, or Industrial Engineering.
- Certification in Powder Coating or Industrial Painting is an added advantage.

Experience

- 5–10 years of experience in powder coating and liquid paint shop operations.
- Experience in sheet metal fabrication, automotive, electrical enclosures, railway, or heavy engineering industries.
- Hands-on knowledge of automatic and manual powder coating systems, pretreatment processes, curing ovens, and paint booth maintenance.
