Job Summary

The Scrub Nurse is responsible for preparing and maintaining a sterile workplace in the Operation Theatre and assisting surgeons during surgical procedures. The role involves handling surgical instruments, ensuring aseptic techniques, maintaining accurate instrument counts, and supporting the surgical team to ensure safe and effective patient care.

Key Responsibilities

Pre-Operative Responsibilities

- Prepare the operating room and sterile field before surgery.
- Verify the availability and functionality of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies.
- Arrange instruments and surgical materials according to the procedure requirements.
- Ensure strict adherence to infection control and sterilization protocols.
- Assist in patient preparation and positioning as required.

Intra-Operative Responsibilities

- Assist surgeons by providing instruments, sutures, and supplies during procedures.
- Maintain a sterile field throughout the surgery.
- Anticipate surgical team requirements and respond promptly.
- Perform sponge, needle, instrument, and sharps counts before, during, and after procedures.
- Monitor sterility and report any breaches immediately.
- Handle surgical specimens according to established protocols.

Post-Operative Responsibilities





- Complete final instrument and material counts.
- Assist in transferring patients safely to the recovery area.
- Prepare instruments for decontamination and sterilization.
- Ensure proper documentation of surgical procedures and records.
- Restock OT supplies and prepare the theatre for subsequent surgeries.

Quality & Safety

- Follow hospital policies, infection prevention standards, and patient safety guidelines.
- Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
- Report incidents, equipment malfunctions, and safety concerns promptly.
- Ensure compliance with NABH, JCI, and other applicable accreditation standards.

Team Collaboration

- Work closely with surgeons, anesthetists, OT technicians, and nursing staff.
- Support efficient workflow within the Operation Theatre.
- Participate in departmental meetings, training programs, and continuing education activities.

Qualifications

Education

- GNM / B.Sc. Nursing from a recognized institution.
- Valid Nursing Registration with State Nursing Council.
