Job Description Engineering Lead Business Unit Engineering / Technology – Centre of Excellence, India Job Family Management Job Role Engineering / Delivery Reports To Head of Delivery / Global Engineering Leadership Team Size To be built initial charter covers setup and scaling of the India engineering team Scope Country (India) Status Draft for internal review 1. Job Mission Set up, build, and lead the engineering function for India, combining hands-on technical leadership with end-to- end team management. The Engineering Lead is accountable for standing up the India engineering team hiring, structure, and ways of working and for the technical consistency, quality, and delivery of the solutions the team builds, in support of global technical requirements. 2. Purpose of the Job Establish and scale the engineering team in India, including team structure, hiring plan, and onboarding. Define and implement engineering delivery processes, quality standards, and governance for the India team. Provide technical leadership across development teams, ensuring architectural consistency and adoption of best practices. Own delivery execution: planning, resource allocation, budget adherence, and SLA/deadline compliance for India-based engineering work. Build trusted working relationships with global Architecture, Product, and Delivery stakeholders. Develop technical and managerial capability within the team through coaching, mentoring, and structured knowledge transfer. Contribute to engineering strategy, technology roadmap, platform modernization initiatives, and continuous improvement programs aligned with global objectives. Act as the primary engineering representative for India, influencing decisions and collaborating with senior global stakeholders across Product, Architecture, Delivery, Operations and Business functions. Ensure compliance with organizational risk, security, audit and regulatory requirements. Proactively identify, assess and mitigate delivery and operational risks. Evaluate emerging technologies and architectural patterns, sponsor proof-of-concepts, and drive innovation initiatives that improve scalability, resilience and engineering efficiency. 3. Key Responsibilities Team Setup & Capability Building Define the India engineering team structure and role profiles in line with global technical requirements. Drive hiring, interviewing, and onboarding of engineers; build a scalable internal capability pipeline. Establish onboarding, training, and career development pathways for team members.
Identify and develop future technical leads as the team scales. Technical & Cross-Team Leadership Provide technical leadership across development teams, working closely with global Architecture on key decisions. Define, promote, and ensure adoption of technical standards, best practices, and engineering guidelines. Supervise and validate implementation choices to ensure alignment with target architecture. Take end-to-end ownership of critical components, from design through production deployment and operations. Delivery Management & Governance Adapt and implement delivery strategy, processes, and governance for the India engineering function. Establish and manage the delivery budget; ensure compliance with budgets, deadlines, and SLAs. Plan, allocate resources, and track execution across projects and support work. Define KPIs and monitor individual and team performance. Report on delivery status, risks, and capability metrics to global leadership. Quality, Security & Robustness Ensure development complies with software quality and security requirements. Oversee and validate code reviews and pull requests. Promote a solid automated testing culture (unit, integration, regression) integrated into CI/CD pipelines. Participate in software security audits and define remediation actions. Coaching & Knowledge Sharing Mentor engineers across the team; support technical growth and career development. Prepare and lead workshops, training sessions, and knowledge-sharing sessions. Drive knowledge transfer and adoption of best practices across the team and with global counterparts. Stakeholder & Client Support Support pre-sales and technical assessment phases where India-based expertise is relevant. Provide technical guidance to Product, Payment Services, and Sales teams on request. Organize and participate in steering/governance forums with global stakeholders as needed. 4. Cross-Functional Requirements Strong awareness of application security topics (authentication, authorization, encryption, secrets management). Solid understanding of distributed systems and data consistency challenges.
Ability to design and oversee solutions capable of handling high volumes and high availability. Strong technical leadership and mentoring mindset, comfortable operating across multiple teams. Rigorous, quality- and performance-focused approach to engineering delivery. 5. Profile At least 10-15 years of experience in software development/engineering, including proven experience in a Tech Lead, Engineering Manager, or equivalent leadership role. Track record of building or scaling an engineering team, ideally within a GCC, shared-services, or similar setup. Strong expertise in Java / Spring / Spring Boot and microservices architectures. Experience with PostgreSQL/Oracle; exposure to Kafka, Kubernetes, AWS, and OpenSearch/Elasticsearch/Redis strongly appreciated. Comfortable working in complex, mission-critical environments (banking, payments, finance). Knowledge of banking or payment systems is a plus but not mandatory domain onboarding and training will be provided. 7. KPIs Team build-out: hiring plan achievement and time-to-fill for open engineering roles. Delivery schedule adherence and quality of deliverables. Budget adherence. Engineering quality metrics (defect rates, code review coverage, test automation coverage). Team retention and capability growth. 8. Job Dimension Interne / Internal Team Size: To be built out (initial charter targets a multi-engineer team, scaling over time).
