Ontologist (Data & Analytics)

Data and Analytics at Comply

Comply is the worlds leading aggregator of financial and regulatory data to support compliance. Our mission is to help financial institutions meet their regulatory obligations with confidence, clarity, and speed. We ingest, process, and enrich vast volumes of complex, high-variance data from hundreds of brokers, data providers and other sources of information across the US and beyond. The scale, diversity, and importance of this data creates unique technical challenges and opportunities for creative engineers. The Comply Data Platform is a strategic initiative at the heart of this mission. It underpins everything from our broker feed ingestion and security master to advanced analytics, AI-driven insights, and future regulatory technologies. Were building something foundational, and were doing it with a modern, cloud-native architecture thats designed to scale.

The Role

We are looking for an Ontologist to establish and govern the semantic layer at the heart of Complys Unified Data Platform a canonical foundation that all consuming applications, AI tools, and data products build against. You will work closely with application teams and business domains to understand how data is used in practice, align terminology across systems, and ensure that semantic models directly support real-world use cases. As a senior member of the technology team, you will hold a cross-functional mandate to define and govern shared

semantic standards across Complys product domains. Working in close partnership with the Data Architect, you will ensure that structural and semantic decisions are made in concert and that the resulting models are adopted in practice by the product and engineering teams who build against them.

Impact & Outcome:

- Consistent and aligned terminology across consuming applications
- Reduced friction in integrating and using data across domains
- Improved clarity and usability of data in APIs, services, and analytics

- Faster delivery of new features and data products due to shared understanding
- Reduction in data issues caused by semantic ambiguity

Key Responsibilities:

Domain Understanding & Alignment

- Work closely with consuming application teams to understand domain concepts, workflows, and data usage patterns
- Identify inconsistencies in terminology and definitions across systems and domains
- Establish and maintain aligned business vocabularies and canonical definitions
- Hold a recognised mandate to convene product and engineering teams, drive alignment on shared definitions, and resolve semantic disputes where domain boundaries intersect Ontology & Semantic Layer Development
- Design and evolve ontologies, taxonomies, and semantic models grounded in real application use cases
- Define entities, relationships, and constraints that reflect how data is consumednot just how it is stored
- Ensure semantic models are practical, usable, and adopted by downstream teams Enablement of Consuming Applications
- Support application and service teams in adopting shared semantic models
- Work with Data Engineers and Backend Engineers to embed semantic consistency into APIs, data products, and pipelines
- Ensure data contracts and interfaces align with agreed domain concepts Cross-Domain Integration
- Align models across multiple domains to enable interoperability between systems
- Support integration efforts where data from different domains must be combined or reconciled
- Help resolve ambiguity in cross-domain data usage Data Quality & Consistency
- Partner with Data Reliability and Data Governance teams to reduce ambiguity-driven data issues

- Contribute to improving data quality through clearer definitions and standardisation
- Identify areas where semantic misalignment leads to operational or reporting issues

Essential Skills & Experience:

- Strong experience in ontology development, semantic modelling, or domain modelling
- Demonstrated ability to work closely with application teams and business domains
- Solid understanding of data modelling principles (conceptual and canonical modelling)
- Familiarity with semantic web technologies (RDF, OWL, SKOS) or equivalent technologies such as JSON-LD
- Strong SQL skills, and exposure to graph query languages such as GQL or Cypher

Desirable Experience:

- Experience within financial services, with trading data, AML, or risk management being particularly advantageous
- Experience working in product-led or application-centric environments
- Exposure to domain-driven design (DDD) and bounded contexts
- Experience aligning APIs, data contracts, or data products to shared models
- Familiarity with knowledge graphs or graph databases
- Experience in data platforms, DataOps, or data reliability contexts
- Familiarity with semantic metric layer tooling such as dbt (MetricFlow), Cube, or equivalent this is a code-adjacent, delivery-oriented role, not a documentation exercise

Ways of Working:

- Highly collaborative, working interacting with product owners and architects across Complys product family
- This role reports into the Data Architect within the Data & Analytics function, with close day-to-day collaboration with the VP Data & Analytics and VP Architecture. The Data Architect and Ontologist work as a paired platform authority
- Pragmatic and delivery-focusedprioritising adoption over theoretical completeness
- Comfortable navigating ambiguity and driving alignment across stakeholders
- Exceptional oral and written communicator, able to translate between business concepts and technical models
