ABOUT THE ROLE: Deputy Manager Technology Engineering (Senior Backend Engineer)

This role is building a technology platform for financial due diligence (FDD), the analytical work that supports private equity transactions. The customer is a US-based CPA firm; their customer is a private equity firm acquiring a target company. The work today is done by trained financial professionals using Excel, Word, and PowerPoint over multi-week engagements that produce a signed-by-partner deliverable. The tool reshapes that workflow with deterministic computation engines, AI-augmented analysis, multi-user coordination, and an audit-trail layer that makes the partners review process meaningfully faster. The tool covers approximately twenty analytical modules across three stages. Stage 1 is data construction (ingesting general ledgers, mapping accounts, building multi-period reconciliations). Stage 2 is analysis (rent schedules, payroll analysis, revenue cuts, healthcare waterfalls, and similar). Stage 3 is consistency checking and report assembly. This is an individual contributor position and will work closely with the Associate Director for Technology Engineering and lead architect to design and deliver the deterministic computation engines that power the core product. The role also involves ongoing collaboration with the FDD operational lead to translate complex analytical requirements into precise, maintainable software.

Key Responsibilities:

- Design and build general ledger ingestion pipelines supporting QuickBooks, NetSuite,



Xero, and Sage Intacct, via direct integrations and Excel exports
- Develop chart-of-account mapping logic with confidence scoring, monthly pivot generation across 36-month periods, multi-entity consolidation, and reconciliation logic tied to audited financials
- Build analytical computation engines for FDD modules including rent schedule analysis (multi location, mid-period moves, sublease offsets, CAM and TI amortisation), payroll analysis, and revenue segmentation by customer, geography, and product line
- Integrate with a versioned, effective-dated rules engine maintained by the operations team, ensuring prior engagements remain reproducible
- Build and maintain a consistency check library; codify each newly discovered failure mode as a permanent regression test
- Implement computation engines as steps within a Temporal-based orchestration workflow, alongside steps that call the Claude API for narrative and judgmental outputs
- Engineer for production scale; general ledger files routinely reach 4-5GB with millions of journal entries, requiring disciplined batching and memory management

Required Qualifications

- 5 8 years of backend engineering experience, with a track record of shipping and maintaining production systems
- Professional fluency in Java, Python,



including type hints, async patterns, and command of the core ecosystem (pandas, FastAPI, SQLAlchemy, pytest)
- Demonstrated experience building data-intensive systems where correctness and volume both matter - financial data, transactional systems, or equivalent
- Strong SQL skills including window functions, CTEs, query optimisation, and schema design
- Rigorous test discipline: unit, integration, and regression coverage written as a matter of practice
- Proven ability to work effectively with non-engineering subject-matter experts and translate domain knowledge into exact technical specifications
- Comfort engineering against messy, inconsistent real-world data

Preferred Qualifications

- AWS production experience including ECS, RDS, S3, and IAM
- Experience with workflow orchestration tools such as Temporal, Airflow, AWS Step Functions, or Celery
- Experience integrating the Anthropic Claude or OpenAI API in production, including structured outputs and tool use
- Background in financial services, accounting, audit, or a similarly regulated domain

Additional Desirable Experience

- Familiarity with Python rules engine libraries (e.g., business-rules, durable-rules)
- Experience generating Excel and Word documents programmatically (openpyxl, python-docx, or equivalent)
- Exposure to vector databases, particularly pgvector
