About Colobbo

Colobbo is a geo-spatial, AI-powered workforce management platform built for Australian field operations one platform to run jobs, inspections, GIS maps and data, and progress claims without disputes. Founded by technologists and infrastructure veterans with 40+ years of combined experience across telecommunications and civil construction in Australia, the U.S., and Mexico, we spent over 8 years in R&D; solving the problems we faced on the ground ourselves.

Today Colobbo is trusted by 500+ field teams operating across 4 countries, managing over $200M in projects powering work on some of the largest infrastructure programs in Australia, including NBN network rollouts, telecommunications deployments, and major construction and utilities projects. Our platform connects head contractors, subcontractors, supervisors, and finance teams into a single source of truth, and our clients have recovered millions in disputed claims and cut invoicing cycles by 40%.

We're headquartered in South Melbourne, Australia, with a distributed engineering team. We're small, hands-on, and product-obsessed your work ships to production and gets used in the field the same week.

About the role

Colobbo runs a production SaaS platform (Node.js API, Angular web app, Ionic mobile app) on AWS for enterprise field-service clients. You will own the infrastructure, CI/CD, and release process end-to-end this is a high-ownership role reporting directly to the founders, not a ticket-queue position. You'll be the person who makes releases boring, keeps production healthy, and gives our engineers a platform they can trust.

What you'll own

- AWS infrastructure: EC2, RDS PostgreSQL, ALB, Auto Scaling, VPC/security groups, IAM, Cognito, SSM, CloudWatch, GuardDuty, WAF
- Windows Linux migration: our Node.js production workload currently runs on Windows Server EC2; you'll plan and execute the migration to Linux
- CI/CD & release management: GitHub Actions pipelines, branch protection, automated testing gates, deployment automation, rollback procedures and enforcing the release process with the dev team
- Database migration execution: run our MSSQL PostgreSQL migration using AWS DMS — replication setup, monitoring,

validation, cutover and rollback planning (schema conversion is owned by backend engineering; you own the migration infrastructure and execution)
- Observability: Sentry (already fleet-wide), CloudWatch alarms, uptime monitoring, release tracking, incident response
- Security operations: secrets management (SSM Parameter Store), credential rotation, dependency and SAST scanning (Dependabot, Snyk, Semgrep, Gitleaks), supporting ACSC Essential Eight ML1 compliance for a government-adjacent client
- Dependency hygiene: reviewing what libraries and versions developers introduce; keeping the supply chain clean
- Application support: Node.js process management (PM2), Redis, background job queues (BullMQ), integrations with third-party services (SMS gateways, email, external APIs)

Must-have

- 5+ years in DevOps / SRE / Platform Engineering at product companies — you've owned production systems, not just projects
- Strong AWS: EC2, RDS, VPC, IAM, ALB/ASG, CloudWatch, SSM (certification nice, real scars better)
- Solid Linux administration; working Windows Server knowledge for the migration period
- CI/CD ownership with GitHub Actions (or GitLab CI/CircleCI with willingness to go deep on GHA)
- Infrastructure as Code — Terraform or AWS CDK — and the discipline to bring an existing hand-built environment under IaC
- Docker — building images, container-based deployment for Node.js services
- Networking fundamentals: VPC design, security groups, DNS, TLS/certificate management, load balancing
- Strong scripting in Bash plus Python or JavaScript/Node.js; can read and debug application code and review PRs from an infra/security lens
- Release and change management discipline — you've owned a release process at a product company and enforced it, not just built the pipeline
- PostgreSQL operations basics (backups, connection management, migration support)
- Security-first instincts: least-privilege IAM, secrets never in code, network hardening
- AWS cost awareness — right-sizing, spot instances, storage tiering; you treat the bill as an engineering metric

Nice-to-have

- Kubernetes / ECS (we don't run clusters today; containerisation is on the roadmap)
- Ansible or similar configuration management (useful for the Windows Linux migration)
- AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional or Solutions Architect
- AWS DMS or other heterogeneous database migration experience (SQL Server PostgreSQL a strong plus)
- AWS Cognito, Sentry, Redis, BullMQ
- MSSQL exposure (we have a legacy database being decommissioned)
- Mobile CI/CD (Fastlane, App Store / Play Store pipelines for Ionic/Capacitor)
- ACSC Essential Eight or similar compliance frameworks
- Experience with AI-assisted development workflows (automated PR review, CI agents)

What valuable looks like in 90 days

- Releases to production are one-command, monitored, and reversible
- Windows Linux migration plan approved and in motion
- All secrets in Parameter Store, zero credentials in files or chat
- On-call/incident process exists and you've handled your first incident
- Developers say deployments got easier, not harder

Why join Colobbo

- Own the platform end-to-end. You're not a cog in a 40-person platform team — you're the engineer who makes releases boring and infrastructure invisible, reporting directly to the founders.
- Real-world impact at scale. Your infrastructure runs software that powers some of the largest infrastructure projects in Australia — NBN rollouts, telecommunications, utilities, and major construction programs.
- Fully remote, flexible hours with AEST overlap. Small, agile team where your impact is direct and visible.
- Onshore travel opportunities to Australia (Melbourne HQ) for planning, team, and client engagements.
- Performance bonus, strong annual raises, and ESOP options — share in the upside you help build, with a clear growth path: as the platform scales, you build and lead the DevOps/platform function.
- Modern stack and modern practices. AWS-native, GitHub Actions, AI-assisted code review and CI automation already in place — you'll extend a well-run engineering system, not rescue a neglected one.

How we'll assess you

We're looking for a genuine engineer who has owned real systems. In interviews expect to:

- Walk us through a production outage you personally resolved end-to-end — what broke, how you found it, what you changed after
- Describe the system you owned longest and what you'd do differently
- Whiteboard a zero-downtime deployment for a Node.js app behind an ALB
- Review a real GitHub Actions workflow and tell us what's wrong with it
