About the Role
As the Bookkeeper / Accountant, you will be the backbone of a well-established UK accountancy practice, handling end-to-end bookkeeping and accounts preparation for a portfolio of small to medium-sized business clients. Working remotely via secure access to our UK office systems, you'll manage everything from bank reconciliations and VAT returns to payroll processing and self-assessment preparation.
This is a rare opportunity to join a respected practice where you'll receive extensive hands-on training directly from the owner, an experienced accountant with 20+ years in the field, with a explicit path to independently managing the entire client lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities
Bank Analysis & Reconciliation
- Analyse client bank statements in Excel, accurately categorising all transactions
- Perform complete bank reconciliations ensuring entries match source documents
- Identify and flag discrepancies or unusual transactions for review
- Maintain organised records of all reconciliation work for clear audit trails
Accounting System Management
- Post reconciled financial data accurately into TaxCalc accounting software
- Verify data integrity between Excel and the accounting software
Payroll & Compliance
- Process monthly client payroll using MoneySoft, including PAYE, National Insurance and statutory deductions
- Generate payslips and employer reports
- Ensure RTI submissions are filed accurately and on time with HMRC
- Prepare and submit quarterly VAT returns in line with Making Tax Digital (MTD)
Tax Preparation Support
- Compile documentation for self-assessment tax returns
- Prepare working papers to support final accounts and tax filings
- Ensure all submissions meet HMRC deadlines
- Maintain accurate records supporting all compliance work
Client Files & Administration
- Review every client file for missing or out-of-date documents
- Collect and update ID and compliance records
- Update client and HMRC details in the software as things change
- Digitise paper records into organised electronic folder structures
- Track client deadlines and ensure proactive completion of all work
Grow into Full Ownership
- Progress clients through the life cycle end-to-end as trust is earned
- Take on client communication and onboarding
- Ultimately enable the owner to be away without work stalling
What We're Looking For
Essential:
- 56+ years' hands-on bookkeeping / accounting experience (production work, not just review)
- Full-cycle bookkeeping and confident, independent bank reconciliation proven for multiple clients
- Exposure to GST, payroll and year-end / self-assessment work
- Strong Excel skills
- Experience with Tally or an equivalent accounting package
- Honest, reliable, and a stable work history
- A self-starter mindset
- Interest in growing into a broader, client-facing role over time
- Able to work 10:00am 5:00pm, MondayFriday UK time, on a minimum one-year arrangement
- Comfortable working via remote access to a UK-based office computer (client data stays in the UK)
- Excellent written and spoken English
Preferred Background:
- Direct experience with UK clients or a UK accountancy practice (a strong bonus, not required)
- Familiarity with VAT / MTD, PAYE payroll, or UK self-assessment
