1. Position Summary
The Senior Marker independently performs conventional marking-out (layout) of steel and alloy steel castings up to 25 MT in the machine shop, owning datum selection, machining-allowance verification and the decision on whether a rough casting will clean up before machining. The role marks complex and critical castings, guides and develops junior markers, and works closely with the machine shop, quality and foundry / methoding teams to flag castings that will not clean up preventing wasted machining time on unsound castings.
2. Key Responsibilities
Marking-Out & Datum Setup
Set up rough castings (up to 25 MT) on the surface plate / marking table using angle plates, V-blocks, jacks and packing, and establish reference planes and datums for marking.
Mark machining lines, centre lines, bore and hole centres, spot faces and reference points accurately from engineering drawings.
Machining Allowance & Casting Soundness
Verify that castings carry adequate and even machining allowance on all machined surfaces and will clean up within available stock.
¢ Detect core shift, mismatch, distortion or insufficient stock, and flag non-conforming castings to foundry / methoding / quality before machining begins.
Drawing & GD&T; Interpretation
¢ Read engineering drawings and interpret dimensions, datums and GD&T; to plan the marking scheme.
Instruments & Documentation
¢ Use and maintain marking instruments height gauge, surface plate, scriber,



squares, protractors, levels, marking media and punches; ensure instruments are within calibration.
¢ Record marking observations and allowance reports and communicate marked references clearly to machining operators.
Coordination & Team
¢ Guide and develop junior markers; allocate marking work and check their layouts.
¢ Coordinate with the machine shop (boring / VTL / VMC / HMC), planning and quality to keep castings moving and support first-off verification.
Safety
¢ Ensure safe slinging, lifting and setup of heavy castings on the marking table using cranes, and follow PPE and safe-handling practices.
3. Qualifications & Experience
¢ Education: ITI (Fitter / Machinist / Tool & Die) or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
¢ Experience: 610 years in conventional marking / layout of castings, preferably heavy steel / alloy castings.
¢ Domain: Proven independent marking of complex and heavy castings, with strong drawing and GD&T; interpretation.
4. Skills & Competencies
¢ Marking: Expert conventional marking-out datum selection, allowance verification and complex layouts.
¢ Drawings: Solid interpretation of engineering drawings and GD&T.;
¢ Judgement: Ability to judge borderline clean-up cases and flag unsound castings early.
¢ Instruments: Skilled use of height gauge, surface plate and marking tools; awareness of calibration.
¢ Safety & Mentoring: Safe heavy-casting handling and the ability to guide junior markers.
5. Key Performance Indicators
¢ Marking accuracy rework / scrap due to marking errors (minimise).
¢ Early identification of non-clean-up castings before machining (machining time / cost saved).
¢ Marking turnaround for castings.
¢ First-off / first-article right.
¢ Zero reportable safety incidents.
