Reporting To: GM-operations
Employment Type: Full-Time
Job Summary:
The Relay Testing Engineer (Expert) is responsible for executing, supervising, and analyzing protection relay testing activities along with hands-on involvement in synchronization and transformer testing processes. The role involves working with numerical and electromechanical relays, validating system protection schemes, and ensuring safe and accurate synchronization of transformers and power systems. This position also supports transformer diagnostics, coordination with site teams, and technical discussions with clients.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Protection Relay Testing & Configuration
● Conduct testing, configuration, and commissioning of protection relays (ABB, Siemens, Schneider, GE, Micom, SEL, etc.).
● Perform tests for: ○ Overcurrent & Earth Fault (50/51, 50N/51N)/Differential Protection (87T)/Distance Protection (21)/Under/Over Voltage (27/59)/Frequency Protection (81)/REF, Overfluxing, Reverse Power, etc.
● Use relay testing kits (OMICRON CMC 256/356, MEGGER, etc.) to simulate faults and verify relay response.
2. Synchronization & Interlocking Testing
● Perform synchronizing checks between transformers, DG sets, or between grid and system.
Use synchronizing relay (e.g., Synchro-check, Synchro-scope) and PLC/HMI interfacing.
● Ensure compliance with protection interlocks and automatic/manual synchronization schemes. 3. Transformer Testing Support
● Conduct/assist in electrical testing of transformers: ○ Tan Delta, IR, PI, TTR, SFRA, Winding Resistance, CT/VT testing. ● Participate in commissioning of transformer protection panels and control wiring checks.
● Ensure logical sequence verification, trip circuit supervision, breaker testing, etc.
4. System Protection Coordination
● Perform relay coordination studies using software (optional – ETAP/Power Factory).
● Validate protection settings as per approved scheme and coordinate with design/engineering teams.
5. Supervision & Client Support
● Lead in office relay testing and synchronization activities with junior engineers/technicians.
● Discuss technical issues, observations, and resolutions with clients and consultants.
● Troubleshoot faulty relays, wiring loops, logic mismatches, or synchronization failures. 6. Documentation & Compliance
● Prepare detailed relay test reports, synchronization checklists, and protection settings logs.
● Maintain test kit calibration records and ensure safety practices are followed at all times.
● Submit EOD reports and final commissioning documentation to HO and client.
Key Skills & Competencies:
● Strong command over numerical protection relay logic and configuration
● Expertise in OMICRON/MEGGER relay test kits
● Knowledge of electrical synchronization principles and auto/manual schemes
● Familiarity with HT/LT panels, breaker schemes, interlocks, and trip logic
● Ability to read SLDs, wiring diagrams, and protection coordination charts
● Excellent communication skills and client interaction abilities
● Safety-oriented with practical knowledge of electrical hazards
Qualifications & Experience:
● Education: B.E. / B.Tech / Diploma in Electrical Engineering
● Experience: 4–8 years in relay testing, transformer testing, and synchronization
● Certifications (Preferred): ○ Relay Testing & Protection (NPTI / OEM / Power Sector Training Institutes) ○ Electrical Safety / HV Switching Procedures ○ Exposure to Power System Simulation Tools (ETAP/PSCAD) is a plus
