A Network Security Engineer (focused on Firewalls, WAF, and Proxy) is responsible for securing an organization's network infrastructure, ensuring traffic flows securely, and protecting against cyber threats. This role involves configuring, monitoring, and managing security appliances like firewalls, web application firewalls (WAFs), and proxy servers to prevent unauthorized access, DDoS attacks, and web-based threats.

Key Responsibilities

1. Firewall Security & Management

• Configure and manage firewalls (Palo Alto, Cisco ASA, Fortinet, Check Point, etc.).

• Create, update, and audit firewall rules to ensure security while maintaining business functionality.

• Monitor firewall logs and alerts for potential security threats.

• Implement intrusion prevention systems (IPS) and traffic filtering.

2. Web Application Firewall (WAF) Protection

• Deploy and manage WAF solutions (AWS WAF, Cloudflare, F5 ASM, Imperva, etc.).

• Configure WAF rules to protect web applications from SQL injection (SQLi), Cross-Site Scripting (XSS), and other web threats.

• Monitor and analyze WAF logs for suspicious traffic and false positives.

• Ensure compliance with OWASP Top 10 security recommendations.

3. Proxy Server & Secure Web Gateway (SWG) Administration

• Configure and manage proxy solutions (Blue Coat, Zscaler, Squid, McAfee Web Gateway).

• Enforce web filtering policies to block malicious or non-compliant content.

• Implement SSL/TLS inspection for encrypted traffic analysis.

• Monitor and analyze proxy logs for suspicious activity.

4. Network Security Monitoring & Incident Response

• Work with SIEM tools (Splunk, QRadar, Microsoft Sentinel) to analyze security logs.





• Investigate security incidents related to network threats and respond accordingly.

• Conduct traffic analysis and troubleshoot security-related network issues.

• Collaborate with SOC and incident response teams to contain and remediate network threats.

5. Compliance & Security Best Practices

• Ensure firewall, WAF, and proxy configurations align with NIST, ISO 27001, CIS Benchmarks, and PCI-DSS.

• Participate in network security audits and risk assessments.

• Implement security best practices to prevent data exfiltration, DDoS attacks, and insider threats.

Required Skills & Tools

Technical Skills:

• Strong expertise in firewall platforms (Palo Alto, Fortinet, Cisco, Check Point).

• Hands-on experience with WAF solutions (Imperva, F5 ASM, AWS WAF).

• Knowledge of proxy & SWG solutions (Zscaler, Blue Coat, Squid Proxy).

• Understanding of network protocols (TCP/IP, HTTP, HTTPS, DNS, VPNs, SSL/TLS).

• Proficiency in SIEM tools for log analysis (Splunk, QRadar, ELK Stack).

• Familiarity with cloud security (AWS, Azure, GCP firewall/WAF solutions).

Soft Skills:

• Robust troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

• Ability to work under pressure in security incident situations.

• Good documentation and report-writing skills.

• Team collaboration with IT, DevOps, and SOC teams.
