Position Summary: Aix Administrator is responsible for the physical and virtual infrastructure layer underpinning the AIX estate 50 IBM Power Systems frames managed through Hardware Management Consoles.This role owns frame-level firmware management, VIO server operations, SAN zoning, and hardware incident resolution.Working closely with the LPAR Operations team, the HMC Administrator ensures the foundation is stable, current, and appropriately configured to support all LPAR workloads.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
HMC and Frame Management (35%)
- Administer all Hardware Management Consoles (HMCs) across a 50-frame IBM Power Systems environment.
- Manage Power Systems firmware at the frame, Central Electronics Complex (CEC), and Flexible Service Processor (FSP) levels using the IBM Fix Level Recommendation Tool (FLRT).
- Plan, schedule, and execute firmware updates in accordance with organizational change management processes.
- Maintain frame configurations, partition profiles, processor and memory resource pools.
- Perform Dynamic Logical Partitioning (DLPAR) operations and ensure optimal hardware resource utilization.
- Monitor hardware health and ensure firmware compliance across the environment.
Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) Administration (25%)
- Install, configure, patch, and maintain Virtual I/O Servers (VIOS).
- Administer virtual SCSI (vSCSI) and Shared Ethernet Adapter (SEA) configurations.
- Manage virtual optical media, virtual disk mappings, and storage virtualization.
- Coordinate VIOS patching activities to maintain IBM support currency while minimizing disruption to client LPAR workloads.
- Troubleshoot and resolve VIOS-related performance and connectivity issues.
SAN and Multipath Management (20%)
- Coordinate SAN zoning activities with the storage administration team.
- Configure, maintain, and troubleshoot MPIO and SDDPCM multipathing.
- Validate storage path redundancy and perform failover testing.
- Maintain storage driver currency and ensure adherence to IBM best practices.
- Diagnose and resolve storage connectivity and multipathing issues.
Hardware Incident Response and Vendor Management (20%)
- Serve as the primary point of contact for IBM hardware support cases (SR/PMR).
- Coordinate IBM field engineer visits, hardware replacements, and concurrent maintenance activities.
- Maintain accurate hardware inventory records within the ServiceNow CMDB.
- Perform root cause analysis for hardware-related incidents.
- Coordinate with vendors and internal teams to ensure timely resolution of hardware issues.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience administering IBM Power Systems hardware.
- Strong expertise with IBM Hardware Management Console (HMC), including CLI and GUI administration.
- Experience with firmware lifecycle management, partition profiles, and Agile Logical Partitioning (DLPAR).
- Hands-on experience administering Virtual I/O Server (VIOS), including vSCSI, Shared Ethernet Adapter (SEA), and virtual optical media.
- Experience working in SAN environments, including SAN zoning, LUN masking, and storage path management.
- Strong knowledge of MPIO and/or SDDPCM configuration and troubleshooting.
- Experience using IBM Fix Level Recommendation Tool (FLRT) for firmware planning and remediation.
- Experience managing IBM hardware support cases using IBM SR/PMR processes.
- Working knowledge of ServiceNow for Change Management and CMDB asset tracking.
- Strong scripting skills using KornShell (ksh), Bash, and HMC CLI scripting.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience automating HMC administration using Ansible and HMC REST APIs.
- Experience with IBM PowerVC or IBM Power Private Cloud.
- IBM Certified Systems Expert Power Systems certification.
- Familiarity with HMC REST API automation and reporting.
- Experience planning and executing concurrent maintenance for Tier 1 production workloads.
- Understanding of AIX LPAR workload characteristics and capacity planning.
- ITIL Foundation certification.
