Senior Automation QA Engineer
Location: Mumbai (Hybrid — 3 days/week in office; remote candidates will be considered)
Employment Type: Full time, or Contract (6 months)
Company Description
Initialyze is a software development and technology services company focused on experience management and the digital marketing domain. The team is dedicated to crafting exceptional customer experiences through design, consulting, platform engineering, digital marketing, and data-driven solutions. Initialyze's "Initialyzers" accelerators offer best-in-class component libraries for leading experience management platforms, including Adobe Experience Manager.
Initialyze emphasizes long-term client partnerships built on trust, commitment, and consistent delivery excellence.
Role Description
We're looking for a Senior Automation QA Engineer who treats quality as a customer experience discipline, not just a code-correctness checkbox. You'll be placed on a client engagement, working within the client's existing Playwright-based test automation framework — ramping up quickly, contributing at a senior level, and acting as a quality strategist who can prioritize risk, mentor engineers, and speak credibly to both developers and business stakeholders.
Responsibilities
Automation Framework — Learn, Contribute, Improve
- Ramp up quickly on the client's existing Playwright-based automation framework, including its AI-assisted testing components and support for CMS-backed web applications across browsers and breakpoints.
- Contribute new tests, fixtures, and utilities within the client's established framework and conventions.
- Independently diagnose and resolve automation failures — flaky tests, environment issues, timing/race conditions, selector brittleness — distinguishing framework/infra problems from genuine application defects.
- Provide informed, credible feedback and improvement recommendations on the client's framework, drawing on your own experience having architected comparable frameworks from scratch.
- Support ongoing maintenance and evolution of the framework as the client's CMS integrations and test coverage expand.
- Integrate with the client's CI/CD pipelines, defect/test management tools, and reporting dashboards.
Quality as Customer Experience
- Be the strongest advocate in the room for anything that could confuse, frustrate, or erode user trust — copy ambiguity, layout regressions, slow flows, inconsistent states, unexpected emails — even when it isn't technically a "bug."
- Regularly walk every major flow the way a real customer would, across web and mobile, across product lines, on real devices.
- Translate customer and business context into testing priorities — know which flows are revenue-critical vs. lower-risk.
Test Planning & Execution
- Build test plans, test suites, and automated (or manual, where needed) test cases for assigned changes.
- Plan, construct, and execute test scripts using Playwright (must-have); Cypress or Selenium experience a plus.
- Support shift-left testing by working closely with developers, business analysts, and product owners.
CI/CD & Reporting
- Integrate and operate test suites in CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, CircleCI, or similar), including parallelization and selective execution strategies.
- Define and report quality metrics — defect escape rate, coverage models, defect trends — to leadership.
Defect Management
- Identify, document, and track defects through resolution using JIRA.
Team & Process Leadership
- Support and mentor junior engineers — training, guidance, and unblocking technical issues.
- Continuously improve testing processes for efficiency and effectiveness.
- Operate effectively in an Agile environment with shifting priorities.
Must-Have Skills
- 5+ years in quality engineering,
test automation, or software engineering with a strong automation focus.
- Deep, hands-on Playwright expertise — you have personally designed and implemented at least one complete automation framework from scratch (architecture, page objects, fixtures, config, reporting) at a prior role. This engagement means working within a client's existing framework, not building a new one — but that depth of prior experience is what lets you evaluate their setup critically and add value quickly. Candidates who have only ever contributed test cases to someone else's framework, without ever having architected one themselves, will not meet the bar for this role.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot automation failures — diagnosing root cause of flaky or failing tests and fixing the framework, not just re-running tests.
- Strong TypeScript/JavaScript proficiency — you write test code you'd be comfortable shipping to production.
- CI/CD fluency — integrating and operating suites in pipelines, with parallelization/selective execution strategies.
- Experience with AI-assisted testing tools (Claude Code, Copilot, Playwright codegen/MCP) in a real workflow.
- Experience with JIRA or a similar defect-tracking tool.
- Comfortable working in Agile environments with changing priorities.
- Prior consulting or client-facing engagement experience, or comfort quickly integrating into an unfamiliar codebase/team as an external contributor.
- Excellent verbal and written communication — able to work across developers, BAs, product owners, and the client's stakeholders directly.
- Strong attention to detail.
Highly Desirable
- Experience testing AEM (Adobe Experience Manager) or comparable enterprise CMS-backed applications.
Nice to Have
- API-layer test automation experience (REST, contract testing).
- Experience with Cypress or Selenium alongside Playwright.
- Consulting-style, client-facing experience — comfortable influencing senior stakeholders and shaping quality strategy on key accounts.
