Role Overview
We are looking for a skilled Hardware Design Engineer with strong hands-on experience in schematic design, PCB layout, and IoT-based product development. The candidate should be able to understand product specifications, convert them into practical electronic hardware designs, prepare schematics, design PCB layouts, and support the complete hardware development cycle from concept to production.
The most important requirement for this role is excellent PCB layout capability using Altium Designer. Experience in IoT, embedded, communication, metering, industrial, or battery-powered products will be highly valuable.
Key Responsibilities
1. Hardware Design
- Understand product requirements and technical specifications given by the product or engineering team.
- Convert functional requirements into reliable electronic hardware designs.
- Select suitable components such as microcontrollers, communication modules, sensors, connectors, power devices, memory devices, and protection components.
- Prepare complete schematics for embedded and IoT-based products.
- Perform basic design calculations for power supply, current consumption, signal levels, protection circuits, and thermal considerations.
- Design hardware around communication interfaces such as UART, SPI, I2C, RS485, USB, Ethernet, CAN, LTE, NB-IoT, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GNSS modules.
- Design power supply sections including AC-DC, DC-DC, LDO, battery backup, supercapacitor backup, and input protection circuits.
2. PCB Layout - Most Important
- Create production-ready PCB layouts using Altium Designer.
- Perform component placement, routing, grounding,
power plane design, and controlled separation of noisy and sensitive sections.
- Design 2-layer, 4-layer, and preferably higher-layer PCBs as per product requirements.
- Follow strong PCB design practices for EMI/EMC reduction, signal integrity, power integrity, thermal management, creepage and clearance, isolation, ESD protection, surge protection, and field reliability.
- Design layouts for IoT products using GSM, LTE, NB-IoT, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GNSS, or other communication modules.
- Follow RF module layout guidelines including antenna placement, keep-out areas, RF trace routing, grounding, and manufacturer recommendations.
- Ensure correct decoupling capacitor placement, return paths, ground stitching, via strategy, and separation of analog, digital, power, and RF sections.
- Prepare PCB manufacturing and assembly outputs including Gerber files, drill files, pick-and-place files, BOM, assembly drawings, fabrication notes, and panelization inputs when required.
- Review PCB layouts for DFM, DFA, testability, manufacturability, and long-term reliability.
- Coordinate with PCB fabrication and assembly vendors to resolve production issues.
3. IoT Product Design Experience
- Smart meters, industrial IoT devices, remote monitoring devices,
data loggers, sensor devices, GPS/GNSS tracking devices, GSM/LTE/NB-IoT products, battery-operated IoT products, energy monitoring products, or automation products.
- Practical understanding of designing products that must work reliably in the field under noise, surge, temperature variation, and communication challenges.
Required Skills
- Strong knowledge of Altium Designer for schematic capture and PCB layout.
- Excellent PCB layout skills; this is the most critical requirement.
- Ability to read, understand, and design from specifications and datasheets.
- Good understanding of electronic components, circuit design, and practical hardware limitations.
- Experience with microcontroller-based embedded hardware design.
- Knowledge of communication interfaces such as UART, SPI, I2C, RS485, USB, Ethernet, CAN, and wireless module interfaces.
- Understanding of power supply design, input protection, reverse polarity protection, surge protection, and ESD protection.
- Knowledge of EMI/EMC design practices and grounding techniques.
- Ability to create BOMs, select alternate components, and support component sourcing.
- Basic debugging skills using multimeter, oscilloscope, logic analyzer, power analyzer, and soldering/rework tools.
- Understanding of PCB manufacturing, assembly, testing, and production release processes.
- Ability to work with firmware, mechanical, purchase, production, and testing teams.
- Positive documentation skills for design notes, test reports, design calculations, and release files.
