POSITION | Director – Centre for Indic Jurisprudence

Purpose

Rishihood University is seeking a founding Director to build and lead the Centre for Indic Jurisprudence from the ground up. This is an institution-building role, not a caretaker academic post: the Director will recruit the founding team, set the research agenda across the Centre's three intellectual layers (Indic Reasoning, Indic Jurisprudence, and Contemporary Applications), launch the Centre's flagship programs and publications, and lead fundraising against a three-year roadmap. The Director will work closely with a Governing Board chaired by Hon'ble Justice UU Lalit and a panel of Visiting Adjunct Scholars, while holding full executive responsibility for operations, partnerships, and growth.

Responsibilities

1. Institution Building & Strategic Leadership:

- Translate the Centre's vision, to become the world's leading institution for the study, development, and application of Indian traditions of jurisprudence, into an executable multi-year strategy.

- Lead execution of the three-year roadmap: Foundation (Year 1), Knowledge Creation (Year 2), and National Platform (Year 3).

- Build coalitions with law schools, universities, and jurisprudence centres in India and globally to grow the field.

1. Research Leadership:

- Direct work across all three layers of the Centre's intellectual architecture: Indic Reasoning (Nyaya, Mimamsa, Tarka, Pramana, Vyakarana), Indic Jurisprudence (evidence, adjudication, rights and duties, constitutional theory), and Contemporary Applications (constitutional interpretation, technology and law, evidence acts).

- Commission and personally guide critical editions, research papers, monographs, and translation projects.





- Maintain academic rigor in coordination with the Research Director, Visiting Adjunct Scholars, and Governing Board.

1. Talent and Team Management:

- Recruit and manage the founding team, including a Research Director, Research Associates, Program Managers, an Administrative Associate, and a Social Media Manager.

1. Programs and Publications:

- Launch and run flagship programs: the Annual Justice Kodanda Ramayya Lecture, the Annual Jurisprudence Summit, the Indic Jurisprudence Fellowship, and the Visiting Scholar Program.

- Oversee the Centre's publication pipeline: the Annual Journal of Indic Jurisprudence, a Working Paper Series, a Book Series, a Teaching Case Series, and the Annual State of Indian Jurisprudence Report.

1. Governance and Stakeholder Management:

- Work closely with the Governing Board on strategic direction, financial oversight, and leadership succession, while retaining full ownership of executive decisions.

- Engage the judiciary, legal academia, and policymakers so that the Centre's scholarship influences legal education and judicial discourse, including content that can be cited in judgments.

1. Fundraising and Financial Management:

- Lead fundraising across founding philanthropy (target: Rs. 15 crore), a subsequent endowment campaign (target: Rs. 50 to 100 crore), and recurring revenue from executive education, research partnerships, and fellowships.

- Own annual budgets across team, research, programs, and operations, and report on financial performance to the Governing Board.

1. Communications and Visibility:

- Build the Centre's profile among comparable global institutions and position it as a distinct, credible voice in jurisprudence.

- Represent the Centre in media, conferences, and public forums.

Qualifications & Experience

- Advanced degree (PhD preferred) in Law, Jurisprudence, Sanskrit or Indology, Philosophy, or a related discipline.





- Deep familiarity with Indian jurisprudential traditions (Nyaya, Mimamsa, Dharmashastra, Arthashastra) as well as modern legal theory and constitutional law.

- Minimum of 10 years of experience in academia, the judiciary, legal practice, or institution-building, with demonstrated leadership.

- A track record of research output, publications, translations, or critical editions, at the intersection of Indic knowledge systems and law.

- Experience fundraising and engaging with philanthropic or institutional donors.

- An established network among the judiciary, legal academia, and policy circles.
