Job Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated Plastic Product Development (NPD) Engineer with 46 years of experience in the automotive industry, preferably with Tier-1 / Tier-2 suppliers. The candidate will be responsible for developing plastic components from concept through production, coordinating with cross-functional teams, ensuring compliance with customer and automotive standards, and delivering products that meet quality, cost, and timing targets.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development of automotive plastic components from RFQ, concept design, prototyping, validation, and production launch.
- Review customer requirements, specifications, drawings, and technical standards.
- Coordinate with design, tooling, manufacturing, quality, purchasing, and suppliers throughout the product development lifecycle.
- Conduct Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), Dimensional feasibility review (DFR), Mold flow analysis reviews, and feasibility studies.
- Support product design optimization considering tooling, manufacturing, cost, quality, and performance.
- Participate in APQP activities and ensure timely completion of development milestones.
- Prepare and maintain engineering documentation including DFMEA, Design Verification Plan & Report (DVP&R;), Engineering Change Requests (ECR), Engineering Change Notices (ECN), and design validation reports.
- Coordinate prototype development, testing, validation, and customer approvals.
- Work closely with tooling vendors during mold design, mold trials (T0, T1, T2), till tool buy off and process optimization.
- Support PPAP documentation and production readiness activities.
- Investigate engineering issues, perform root cause analysis, red bin analysis and implement corrective actions.
- Ensure compliance with customer-specific requirements and automotive quality standards.
- Participate in customer meetings, technical reviews, and design discussions.
Required Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of plastic materials such as PP, ABS, PC, PA, PBT, POM, TPE, (GF / TF) and their applications.
- Good understanding of injection molding processes and tooling concepts.
- Experience in plastic part design guidelines including:
- Wall thickness, Draft angles, Ribs, Bosses, Snap fits, Weld lines, Sink marks, Warpage, Gate locations
- Familiarity with GD&T; and engineering drawings.
- Knowledge of APQP, PPAP, DFMEA, PFMEA, Control Plan, MSA, and SPC.
- Understanding of automotive standards and customer requirements.
- Experience with engineering change management (ECR/ECN).
- Knowledge of product validation and testing requirements.
- Basic understanding of tolerance stack-up and dimensional analysis.
Software Skills
- CAD software such as Siemens NX, CATIA or Creo.
- Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
- Exposure to Moldflow analysis software is an advantage (can perform flow analysis by own).
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Plastics Engineering, Polymer Engineering, Production Engineering, or a related discipline.
Preferred Experience
- 46 years of experience in plastic product development within the automotive industry.
- Experience working with OEM & Tier-1 automotive customers.
- Exposure to OEM development processes.
- Experience in interior, exterior, under-the-hood, or functional plastic components.
- Knowledge of customer-specific requirements for global automotive OEMs is preferred.
