Role & responsibilities
- Client Consultation & Briefing: Meeting with clients to determine project goals, lifestyle requirements, preferred styles, and budget constraints.
- Space Planning: Analyzing floor plans to optimize traffic flow, furniture placement, and spatial efficiency.
- Concept Development: Creating "mood boards" and design themes that include color schemes, textures, and initial sketches for client approval.
- Technical Drafting: Producing detailed 2D drawings and 3D visualizations using software like AutoCAD, SketchUp, or Revit to guide construction and installation.
- Material & Product Specification: Sourcing and selecting "FF&E;" (Furniture, Fixtures, and Equipment), including flooring, wall finishes, lighting, and textiles.
- Project & Budget Management: Creating timelines, estimating costs, managing purchase orders, and ensuring the project remains within the allocated budget.
- Site Supervision & Collaboration: Coordinating with architects, contractors, and specialized trades (like electricians and plumbers) to oversee the implementation of design plans.
- Compliance & Safety: Ensuring all designs strictly adhere to building codes, health and safety regulations, and accessibility standards (like ADA).
Preferred candidate profile
1. Educational Qualifications
- Mandatory Degree: Most recruiters require a Bachelors degree (B.Des, B.Sc, or B.Arch)
in Interior Design or Architecture.
- Diploma Options: A 2-3 year diploma from a reputed institute is often acceptable for residential or junior roles.
2. Technical & Software SkillsCandidates must demonstrate proficiency in "end-to-end" design software:
- Drafting & 3D Modeling: Mastery of AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Revit is essential for creating floor plans and elevations.
- Visualization: Ability to create photorealistic renders using 3ds Max, V-Ray, Enscape, or Lumion.
- Presentation: Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and InDesign for creating mood boards and high-fidelity client presentations.
3. Experience & Portfolio
- Experience Levels:
- Mid-Level (2–5 years): Should have a proven track record in specific sectors like high-end residential, corporate offices, or luxury furniture.
- Site Execution: A "preferred" candidate must have hands-on site experience, including vendor coordination, material sourcing, and quality monitoring.
4. Key Soft Skills & Competencies
- Communication: Exceptional verbal and written English is mandatory to defend designs and manage client expectations.
- Project Management: Skills in budgeting, BOQ (Bill of Quantities) preparation, and maintaining project timelines.
- Spatial Intelligence: A deep understanding of traffic flow, ergonomics, and biophilic design principles.
