Job Description: Manual Lathe Operator

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced and skilled Manual Lathe Operator to join our production team. In this role, you will be responsible for setting up and operating conventional (manual) lathe machines to shape, turn, thread, and bore metal components according to technical drawings. You must have a strong mechanical mindset, a sharp eye for precision, and the ability to work independently.

Key Responsibilities

Machine Operation & Setup

- Set up and operate manual lathe machines to perform operations like turning, facing, boring, knurling, threading, and parting.
- Mount, center, and secure raw metal components in the lathe chuck or between centers.
- Select, sharpen, and install the correct cutting tools and tool bits based on the material (e.g., MS, SS, Aluminum, Brass).
- Manually adjust machine speeds, feed rates, and depth of cuts according to the material and job requirements.

Measurement & Quality Control

- Read and interpret mechanical blueprints, engineering drawings, and job route sheets.
- Measure and inspect finished parts during and after the process using precision instruments like vernier calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, and thread gauges.




- Maintain strict dimensional tolerances as specified in the drawings to ensure zero defects.

Maintenance & Safety

- Clean and lubricate the lathe machine daily; check coolant levels and oiling systems.
- Ensure cutting tools are sharp and replace them when worn out.
- Follow all workshop safety guidelines, including wearing proper safety gear (PPE) and keeping the workstation free of metal scrap/chips.

Required Skills & Qualifications

- Experience: 2 to 5 years of proven experience operating Conventional/Manual Lathe machines in a manufacturing or machine shop environment.
- Blueprint Reading: Strong ability to read and understand structural and mechanical drawings.
- Precision Measurement: Expert handling of manual measuring tools (Micrometers, Calipers, Dial Indicators).
- Material Knowledge: Valuable understanding of metal properties and appropriate cutting speeds/feeds for different materials.
- Physical Fitness: Ability to handle heavy workpieces, stand for long hours, and lift materials safely.

Preferred Education

- ITI Certificate in Turner / Fitter trade or equivalent practical workshop experience.
