VMC Programmer (Vertical Machining Center)

Job Summary

The VMC Programmer is responsible for creating, modifying, and optimizing CNC programs for Vertical Machining Centers to manufacture precision components. The role involves interpreting engineering drawings, selecting tooling, setting machining parameters, troubleshooting production issues, and ensuring products meet quality standards while maximizing productivity.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and optimize CNC programs for VMC machines using CAM software or G-code programming.

Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications.

Select appropriate cutting tools, fixtures, and machining methods.

Determine machining sequences, cutting speeds, feeds, and tool paths.

Perform program proving, testing, and troubleshooting before production.

Optimize cycle times while maintaining product quality and tool life.

Support machine setup and first-off component inspection.

Collaborate with production, quality, and engineering teams to resolve machining issues.

Maintain CNC program documentation and revision records.

Ensure compliance with quality standards, safety regulations, and company procedures.

Recommend process improvements to enhance productivity and reduce manufacturing costs.

Assist in training machine operators on program execution and machining practices.

Required Qualifications

Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, or a related technical field.





CNC/VMC programming certification is an added advantage.

Required Skills

Strong knowledge of CNC programming (G-code and M-code).

Experience with CAM software such as Mastercam, Siemens NX CAM, SolidCAM, PowerMill, or similar.

Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and GD&T.;

Knowledge of cutting tools, workholding, machining processes, and tooling selection.

Understanding of precision measuring instruments such as vernier calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and bore gauges.

Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.

Knowledge of machining materials such as steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and alloys.

Good communication and teamwork abilities.

Commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement.

Experience

Typically 2–5 years of experience in VMC/CNC programming and machining, depending on the organization's requirements.
