Job Description:

A Metallurgist in a steel company is responsible for studying, developing, testing, and improving metals (especially steel) to ensure they meet required mechanical, chemical, and structural properties. The role focuses on production quality, process optimization, failure analysis, and material development.

Key Responsibilities

1. Steel Production & Process Control

- Monitor steelmaking processes like Blast Furnace, Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF)
- Control chemical composition of molten steel
- Ensure proper temperature, refining, and alloying conditions
- Support rolling, casting, and heat treatment operations

2. Quality Control & Testing

- Perform mechanical tests (tensile, hardness, impact, etc.)
- Analyze chemical composition using spectroscopy and lab instruments
- Inspect microstructure using metallographic techniques
- Ensure compliance with standards (ASTM, BIS, ISO)

3. Failure Analysis

- Investigate product failures (cracks, fractures, corrosion issues)
- Identify root causes and recommend corrective actions
- Work with production teams to prevent recurrence

4. Research & Development

- Develop new steel grades and alloys
- Improve strength, durability, corrosion resistance, and machinability
- Support innovation for automotive, construction,



and industrial applications

5. Process Improvement

- Optimize production cost and efficiency
- Reduce material wastage and defects
- Improve yield and energy efficiency in steel plants

6. Documentation & Reporting

- Maintain lab records and production reports
- Prepare technical reports on experiments and findings
- Support audits and quality certifications

7. Cross-functional Collaboration

- Work with production, maintenance, and quality teams
- Coordinate with engineers and plant operators
- Support customer requirements and technical queries

Required Qualifications

- B.E./B.Tech in Metallurgical Engineering / Materials Science
- M.Tech (optional for R&D; roles)
- Knowledge of physical metallurgy, thermodynamics, phase diagrams

Skills Required

- Solid understanding of steelmaking processes
- Metallographic analysis and lab testing skills
- Problem-solving and analytical thinking
- Knowledge of industrial standards (ASTM, BIS, ISO)
- Basic computer skills (Excel, reporting tools, sometimes simulation software like Thermo-Calc or MATLAB)
