This role is for a BA who has found their feet and is ready to own a workstream. You lead discovery. You shape the design. You know enough about what automation technology can do to ask the right questions without needing to build it yourself. You are the reason projects start well and stay on track.

THE DELIVERY LIFECYCLE YOU WILL OWN

Discovery

Assessment

Design

Delivery

Adoption

Workshops & interviews

Feasibility & scoping

PDDs & requirements

Dev liaison & UAT

Change & handover

You lead all five phases. You do not need to build the solution — you need to ensure it gets built correctly.

ROLE OVERVIEW

At this level, you are not being handed a workstream to support — you are being given one to own. You will manage the full analysis and design lifecycle for automation projects from first conversation with the business through to developer handover and user acceptance, with minimal direction from senior colleagues on day-to-day execution.

You understand automation and AI technology at a conceptual level — you know what is achievable with RPA, low-code platforms, intelligent document processing, and AI-assisted workflows. You use that awareness to guide the business toward realistic solutions and to write specifications that developers can follow without repeated clarification.

Responsibilities:

- Plan and lead discovery sessions independently — designing workshops, preparing materials, managing the room, and synthesising outputs into a clear picture of the current-state process.
- Conduct structured automation assessments, evaluating processes against criteria including volume, rule-based logic, exception frequency, system dependencies, and ROI potential — and producing a written recommendation with supporting rationale.
- Author complete Process Design Documents (PDDs) and Business Requirements Specifications that are precise, testable, and developer-ready with no critical gaps.
- Drive solution design workshops alongside architects and developers, representing the business perspective, challenging technical proposals that don't reflect real-world usage, and ensuring the agreed design is fully documented.
- Act as the primary liaison between business stakeholders and the development team throughout build and test — managing scope, expectations, and communication on both sides.
- Lead UAT planning and execution: design test scenarios, support business testers, capture and triage defects, and make the call on readiness with confidence.

- Own change management and adoption activities at the project level — ensuring users understand, trust, and are trained on the automated process before go-live.
- Provide structured feedback and guidance to junior BAs working alongside you on the same project, reviewing their documentation and helping them develop.
- Keep pace with developments in automation and AI — not by building, but by reading, attending team sessions, and proactively asking questions. Your value to the team includes having an informed view of what's coming.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Education

Bachelor's degree in Business, Management, Information Systems, or equivalent.

Experience

Approximately 1year as a Business Analyst, with a clear track record of owning the analysis and design phases on at least two end-to-end delivery projects.

Automation / AI

No hands-on development required. You should have enough exposure — through project work, vendor conversations, or self-directed learning — to understand what RPA, low-code automation, and AI-assisted processing can and cannot do.

Coding

Not required at any level. What matters is that you can read a process map, a data flow, and a set of business rules — and turn them into something a developer can act on.

SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE

Essential:

- Expert-level process documentation — process maps, swimlane diagrams, PDDs, BRS, and user stories that set the standard for quality on the team.
- Confident, structured workshop facilitation with the ability to manage complex stakeholder groups, surface hidden requirements, and resolve conflicting views in the room.
- The ability to write requirements that are specific, measurable, and unambiguous — with a demonstrable reduction in developer queries and rework on your projects.
- Robust understanding of SDLC and Agile delivery, and how BA responsibilities shift across sprint cycles, from discovery through to retrospective.
- Experience managing stakeholder relationships across seniority levels and functions — including the confidence to push back and set expectations when scope or feasibility is at risk.

- UAT planning and execution experience, including test scenario design, defect triage, and go/no-go decision-making.

Technical awareness (no hands-on required):

- Working knowledge of what RPA, low-code workflow platforms (e.g. UiPath, Power Automate), and AI-assisted tools can realistically automate — sufficient to assess feasibility and challenge under-scoped or over-scoped proposals.
- Familiarity with common integration patterns (APIs, file-based transfer, database queries) at a conceptual level — enough to identify system dependency risks in a process.
- Awareness of where AI and GenAI are creating new automation possibilities — intelligent document processing, natural language interfaces, decision automation — and how to factor that into a forward-looking recommendation.

MINDSET & BEHAVIOURS

Quality

What we mean

End-to-end ownership

You don't hand off and move on. You care about whether the solution that gets built actually matches what the business needed — and you stay engaged until it does.

Structured curiosity

You ask questions methodically and know when to go deeper. You are not satisfied with a surface-level process description, and you know the right follow-up questions to get to the real logic.

Adaptive intelligence

The automation landscape is changing rapidly. You don't need to be the most technical person in the room — but you need to be the most informed non-technical person, and you take that responsibility seriously.

Confident communicator

You can run a stakeholder workshop and write a developer-ready spec in the same day. Neither audience confuses you. You adapt your register without losing precision.

Constructive challenge

You are willing to tell a stakeholder their process isn't ready for automation, or tell a developer their proposed solution doesn't reflect how the business actually works. Diplomatically, but clearly.

Growth mindset

You are three years in and aware you have more to learn. You seek out feedback, reflect on what went wrong in the last project, and actively look for ways to improve your craft.

Where this role sits

Junior BA This role Senior BA

The Junior BA is primarily business-facing and works under guidance. The Senior BA leads technically complex programmes, evaluates emerging AI tooling, and sets the direction for the team. This role is the step between — independent in delivery, developing in technical depth, and beginning to shape how others work.
