Location / Work Model Bengalure. Involves occasional travel to customer sites and facilities for study, design validation, and deployments. Company / Team Summary (About Hortisort) Hortisort designs and builds equipment for grading, handling, and processing horticultural/agricultural produce. We combine mechanical design, automation-ready hardware, and field reliability to deliver systems that perform in real production environments. Role Summary The Mechanical Design Engineer will own the mechanical design of new and existing Hortisort machines and modulesfrom concept through release to manufacturing and field deployment. This role requires close cross-functional collaboration with electrical, electronics, optics, and software teams to understand mechanical dependencies and ensure the design supports system-level performance. Key Responsibilities Design mechanical systems and assemblies for sorting/handling equipment (structures, mechanisms, guarding, product-contact parts). Work closely with electrical, electronics, optics, and software teams to understand mechanical design dependencies (packaging, mounting, alignment, thermal considerations, service access, cable routing, etc.) and incorporate them into robust designs. Convert requirements into concepts, detailed designs, and production-ready documentation. Create 3D CAD models, 2D drawings, GD&T;, and complete BOMs; maintain revision control for Engineering Changes. Perform engineering calculations and analysis (strength/deflection, torque/power, bearings, drives, pneumatics, vibration as needed). Select components and suppliers (motors, gearboxes, bearings, belts/chains, pneumatics, fasteners, sensor mounts, optical module mounts). Support prototype builds: fit-up, troubleshooting, iterations, and design validation testing. Collaborate with Electrical/Controls to ensure clean integration (enclosures, mounting,
grounding considerations, harness/cable routing, access panels). Drive DFM/DFA/DFS improvements to reduce cost, simplify assembly, and improve reliability and serviceability. Support production and field issues: root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and documentation updates. Travel to customer sites or facilities for studying current installations, gathering requirements, validation, and deployments. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent practical experience). Experience in mechanical design for industrial machinery / automation equipment / special-purpose machines. Proficiency in 3D CAD; open to working with Autodesk Fusion (Fusion 360). Strong fundamentals: mechanisms, tolerancing, materials, machining/fabrication, and design for reliability. Experience in sheet metal designing and familiar with sheet metal related operations. Experience producing manufacturing drawings and BOMs; familiarity with GD&T.; Hands-on approach: comfortable working with prototypes and supporting shop/manufacturing builds. Robust cross-functional communication skills. Preferred / Nice-to-Have Experience with food/agri/horticulture equipment, washdown environments, or sanitary design. Familiarity with pneumatics, sensors, and automation concepts (mounting, repeatability, alignment). Experience with FEA and design validation test planning. Knowledge of machine safety practices (guarding, interlocks, risk assessment methods). Exposure to PDM/PLM/ERP processes. Tools & Technologies (Edit as needed) CAD: Autodesk Fusion (Fusion 360); other CAD exposure is a plus Documentation: Engineering drawings, BOMs, revision control/ECO Manufacturing processes: machining, welding, sheet metal, coatings, stainless fabrication Travel / Fieldwork Periodic travel to customer sites or Hortisort facilities for requirement gathering, fit checks, validation testing, and deployment support.
