Job Summary

An EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) Operator sets up and runs specialized thermal machining equipment (Wire EDM or Sinker/Ram EDM). They use electrical discharges (sparks) to cut, shape, and erode metal materials into highly precise tools, dies, and components that traditional cutting tools cannot handle. - Machine Setup: Thread electrodes/wires, position workpieces, and set up fixtures.
- Operation: Load and execute CNC programs, adjusting electrical parameters like voltage and spark duration.
- Fluid Control: Monitor and maintain dielectric fluid levels, temperature, and filtration systems.
- Quality Inspection: Use micrometers, calipers, and optical comparators to verify tolerances down to microns.
- Maintenance: Replace worn wires, clean guides, and maintain electrodes to prevent machining defects. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Required Skills & Qualifications

- High school diploma, technical school certificate,



or completed apprenticeship.
- Proven experience operating Wire EDM or Sinker EDM machinery.
- Strong ability to read and interpret complex engineering blueprints and GD&T; (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
- Competency in using high-precision measuring instruments.
- Strong understanding of metallurgy and how different metals react to electrical erosion. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

- Wire EDM Operator: Focuses on machines using a continuously moving brass or zinc-coated wire to make precise 2D and 3D cuts.
