Role: Academic Talent Council - Subject Specialist
Teacher assessment & selection - Preprimary / Math

Function: Academic Talent Council (central teacher selection)
Reports to: ATC Lead
Location / base: [Bengaluru] with travel across branches & hiring camps
Employment type: Full time, permanent
Travel: Periodic for demo rounds, campus drives and peak-season

Background required: Academic / teaching (NOT recruitment)
About the role
Orchids hires around 2,500 teachers a year. The Academic Talent Council is a dedicated, central team whose only job is to assess and select teachers for academic subjects nothing else. As a Subject Specialist, you are the academic bar for every Preprimary / Math teacher we hire. You test, interview and observe candidates, score them objectively, and recommend who joins our classrooms. Crucially, you stay accountable for how those teachers perform once they start your success is measured by whether the teachers you select are still succeeding at the 90-day mark. This is not a recruitment role and we are not looking for recruiters. We are looking for a strong educator who can reliably tell an excellent [Preprimary / Math ] teacher from an average one, and do it
consistently, at volume, across the country.
Who this role is for
An experienced teacher, HOD, mentor or teacher-trainer who knows what great English teaching
looks like and wants to shape the quality of teaching across an entire school network not just one
classroom.
What you will do
Assess & select
- Run grade-band-specific subject knowledge tests and situational judgement assessments for Preprimary / Math candidates.
- Conduct standardised, 45-minute academic interviews covering learning outcomes, pedagogy, classroom management, assessment and differentiated learning.
- Run demo / explanation rounds watch candidates teach and evaluate teaching skill in action: use of examples, differentiation, clarity and classroom presence.
- Score every candidate objectively on the standard scorecard, so decisions are comparable and defensible.
Build the pipeline
- Map and tier source schools (AD) within branch catchments for English, directing sourcing toward the strongest talent.
- Partner with branch recruitment on open requisitions and pipeline health.
- Feed signals on weak in-system teachers into the proactive replacement list.
Own the outcome
- Own the 90-day competency outcome of the teachers you select.
- Run a clean, welcoming onboarding and kick off the 100-day program when your hires
report to school.
- Contribute to subject question banks and take part in scoring calibration so the bar stays consistent across the team.
What we are looking for
1. Essential:
- Deep subject expertise in Preprimary / Math
- A genuine academic / teaching background
- Ability to judge teaching quality objectively & consistently
- Strong communication; comfort interviewing & giving feedback
- Willingness to travel for demos & hiring camps
2. Strongly preferred:
- 5+ years classroom teaching at the relevant grade band
- Experience as an HOD, mentor or teacher-trainer
- Familiarity with CBSE / ICSE / IB rigour
- Exposure to assessment / test design
- Comfort working with data and scorecards
3.Not required:
- Prior recruitment / HR experience
- HR qualification or certification
- ATS or sourcing-tool skills
