Server Admin (L2)
Role Overview The L2 Server Data Center Engineer is responsible for the intermediate-level administration, maintenance, and optimization of the hybrid infrastructure workplace. This role focuses on deep-dive Root Cause Analysis (RCA), capacity management, and the execution of complex planned changes across Windows, Linux, and Virtualization platforms.
Key Responsibilities 1. Windows Server Administration
- Advanced Troubleshooting: Perform Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for recurring issues; analyze event logs and system errors to implement permanent remediations.
- Lifecycle Management: Plan and execute patching cycles (including rollback strategy) and perform firmware/driver updates.
- Configuration: Manage Windows services, dependencies, scheduled tasks, and implement baseline hardening policies.
- Storage: Execute disk/volume expansions and cleanup; troubleshoot complex OS-level network integration.
2. VMware Virtualization
- Host Management: Execute vCenter and ESXi host patching, maintenance, and cluster-level performance tuning.
- VM Lifecycle: Manage datastore capacity, VM placement, templates, and snapshots.
- Networking: Configure and troubleshoot vSwitches, port groups, and vMotion failures.
- Optimization: Analyze performance reports for clusters and hosts to identify bottlenecks.
3. Backup Recovery Operations
- Incident Resolution: Investigate and resolve complex backup job failures and performance issues.
- Policy Management: Manage backup schedules, retention policies, and job tuning.
- Restoration: Execute on-demand restorations with full validation; coordinate tape rotation and vaulting.
- Compliance: Generate backup health and compliance reports for audit requirements.
4. Linux Administration
- System Maintenance: Apply OS patches, manage LVM (Logical Volume Management), and handle filesystem growth/shrinkage.
- Fault Resolution: Troubleshoot kernel panics, failed services,
and filesystem errors using syslog and journalctl.
- Automation: Configure cron/systemd jobs and manage SSH configurations for basic hardening.
- Recovery: Lead recovery efforts for failed boot sequences or critical service scenarios.
5. Active Directory Identity
- Policy Management: Design and manage Group Policy Objects (GPOs) and Organizational Unit (OU) structures.
- AD Health: Troubleshoot complex authentication, replication, and DNS issues; perform regular Domain Controller maintenance.
- Object Management: Clean up stale objects and manage service accounts, SPNs, and DFS namespaces.
6. Documentation, Reporting DR
- Process Maturity: Maintain and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), runbooks, and Knowledge Base (KB) articles.
- Operational Health: Prepare weekly and monthly infrastructure health reports.
- Business Continuity: Actively participate in Disaster Recovery (DR) drills and maintain infrastructure recovery documentation.
Required Technical Skills
- OS Platforms: Strong proficiency in Windows Server (2016/2019/2022) and Linux (RHEL/CentOS/Ubuntu).
- Virtualization: Hands-on experience with VMware vSphere 7.x/8.x.
- Backup Tools: Experience with enterprise tools (e.g., Veeam, Commvault, or Veritas).
- Infrastructure Services: Deep understanding of DNS, DHCP, DFS, and Active Directory.
- Tools: Proficiency in ServiceNow (ITSM) and monitoring tools (e.g., Nagios, Zabbix).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience: 3 5 years of experience in Server/DC operations.
- Certifications: MCSA/MCSE (Windows), VCP (VMware), or RHCSA (Linux) is highly desirable.
- Shift: Ability to support 24/7 rotational shifts and planned weekend maintenance windows.
