Job Description – Technical Perfumer (GC-MS Specialist)Position
Department: Research & Development / Technical Services
Location: Howrah ( Kolkata) , West Bengal
CTC : ₹ 12.0 to 15.0 LPA
Role Summary
An experienced and technically proficient Technical Perfumer to lead fragrance development, fragrance analysis, reverse engineering, and formulation optimization using advanced analytical techniques, particularly Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS).
The role requires a strong understanding of fragrance chemistry, aroma materials, formulation science, analytical interpretation, and manufacturing processes to develop creative, high-performing, and commercially viable fragrance solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Fragrance Development
- Develop and optimize fragrance formulations for Fine Fragrances, Personal Care, Home Care, Fabric Care, Air Care,
and Industrial applications.
- Create fragrances based on customer briefs, market trends, and benchmark products.
- Modify existing formulations to improve performance, stability, cost, and regulatory compliance.
GC-MS Analysis & Technical Evaluation
- Perform qualitative and quantitative analysis of fragrance compounds using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS).
- Interpret chromatograms and mass spectra for identification of fragrance ingredients.
- Conduct fragrance fingerprinting and comparative analysis of competitor products.
- Support reverse engineering of fragrance formulations while maintaining legal and ethical standards.
- Troubleshoot analytical challenges and recommend formulation improvements based on GC-MS findings.
Raw Material & Fragrance Chemistry
- Evaluate and approve natural and synthetic aroma chemicals.
- Develop optimized raw material selection strategies considering performance, availability, cost, and sustainability.
- Maintain knowledge of emerging aroma molecules and industry innovations.
- Build and maintain a comprehensive fragrance ingredient database.
Product Performance & Stability
- Evaluate fragrance stability under different environmental and product conditions.
- Assess fragrance performance in various applications including soaps, detergents, candles, cosmetics, toiletries, and household products.
- Recommend formulation improvements for enhanced longevity, substantivity, and olfactory performance.
Technical Support
- Collaborate with Sales and Business Development teams to provide technical support during customer interactions.
- Present fragrance concepts and explain analytical findings to internal and external stakeholders.
- Resolve customer complaints through scientific investigation and root cause analysis.
Manufacturing Support
- Support scale-up of fragrance formulations from laboratory to commercial production.
- Ensure batch-to-batch consistency through analytical validation.
- Recommend process improvements for fragrance manufacturing operations.
Regulatory & Quality
- Ensure compliance with IFRA standards and applicable global fragrance regulations.
- Support documentation related to product specifications, technical data sheets, and analytical reports.
- Maintain laboratory best practices and instrument calibration records.
Desired Candidate Profile
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Perfumery, Cosmetic Science, or related discipline.
- Professional training in Perfumery will be an added advantage.
- 5–15 years of experience in fragrance development and technical perfumery.
- Hands-on experience in GC-MS, GC, analytical chemistry, and fragrance characterization.
- Strong understanding of fragrance formulation principles and aroma chemicals.
- Experience in fragrance matching, reverse engineering, and analytical interpretation.
- Working knowledge of IFRA guidelines, REACH, and fragrance regulatory requirements.
- Familiarity with fragrance applications across FMCG, Personal Care, Home Care, Fine Fragrance, and Industrial products.
- Excellent sensory evaluation and olfactory skills.
- Strong problem-solving, documentation, and communication abilities.
