Job Description: The General Manager (GM) of Purchase for a steel pipes manufacturing company is a senior leadership role responsible for directing strategic sourcing, supplier negotiations, and inventory control. The goal is to procure raw materials like steel coils and scrap at optimal costs to ensure uninterrupted pipe production. [1, 2, 3] Core Responsibilities

- Strategic Sourcing: Develop procurement strategies for direct materials (HR/CR steel coils, galvanized sheets, zinc for coatings) and indirect consumables (welding fluxes, gases, mill rolls, spare parts).
- Vendor Management & Negotiation: Identify and evaluate key suppliers. Negotiate long-term contracts, bulk pricing, and favorable credit/payment terms.
- Cost Optimization: Track global metal indices (e.g., LME) and domestic commodity price trends to time purchases and maximize profit margins.
- Inventory & Working Capital Control: Implement inventory optimization techniques (e.g., JIT, ABC analysis) to prevent stockouts while minimizing tied-up capital.
- Logistics & Supply Chain: Oversee inward freight,



rake movements, and transportation, ensuring timely delivery to the plant floor.
- Cross-functional Leadership: Collaborate with Production, Quality, and Finance teams to ensure materials meet manufacturing standards and supplier invoices are processed accurately. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical/Metallurgy) or an MBA in Supply Chain Management is highly preferred.
- Experience: Typically requires 15 to 25+ years in heavy engineering or steel procurement, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
- Technical Skills: Deep understanding of steel manufacturing processes (ERW, Saw, or Seamless pipes) and robust proficiency with ERP systems (like SAP MM). [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
