Role & responsibilities
Key Responsibilities & Duties
1. Testing & Quality Control Operations
- Perform Advanced Testing: Conduct physical and chemical testing of liquid and cured paint properties, including viscosity, density, weight per gallon, gloss, opacity, and drying time.
- Raw Material Validation: Analyse incoming raw materials (pigments, resins, solvents, additives) against standard benchmarks before release to production.
- Colour Matching & Aesthetics: Utilize spectrophotometers and manual evaluation to verify colour accuracy, tinting strength, and shade matching against master standards.
- Mechanical & Durability Testing: Assess cured film characteristics, including scratch resistance, pencil hardness, impact resistance, flexibility (cupping test), and adhesion properties.
2. In-Process Quality Assurance & Troubleshooting
- Batch Approval: Review and authorize in-process paint batches, making calculated adjustments to correct deviations in viscosity, colour, or solids content.
- Root Cause Analysis (RCA): Investigate production batch failures, skinning issues, settling, or off-shade occurrences, providing actionable solutions to the production team.
- Minimize Rework: Suggest process adjustments to optimize chemical formulations and reduce batch cycle times and material waste.
3. Calibration, Compliance & Documentation
- Instrument Maintenance: Calibrate and maintain critical laboratory apparatus, such as Hegman gauges, Ford cups, gloss meters, Karl Fischer titrators, and GC systems.
- SOP & Documentation: Update, maintain, and enforce Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), test reports, and Goods Manufacturing Practices (GMP/GDP) records.
- Audit Compliance: Maintain active documentation to comply with ISO 9001:2015 (QMS) and environmental, health, and safety regulations.
4. Mentorship & Team Collaboration
- Supervise Juniors: Train, guide, and oversee the work of junior lab assistants and technicians on regular inspection routines.
- Cross-Functional Communication: Collaborate actively with the R&D; team to handle scale-ups, and with Procurement to evaluate alternative raw material suppliers.
Technical Skills Required
- Equipment Proficiency: Hegman Gauge, Viscometers (Krebs, Cone & Plate), Spectrophotometer, Gloss Meter, Salt Spray Chamber, Pencil Hardness Tester.
- Industry Standards: Sound knowledge of ASTM, ISO, and IS testing methodologies specific to paints and architectural/industrial coatings.
- Statistical Tools: Familiarity with Statistical Process Control (SPC) tools, 7 QC tools, and standard laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
Preferred candidate profile
Soft Skills & Behavioural Attributes
- Strong eye for detail, particularly regarding subtle differences in shade and colour matching.
- Ability to work effectively under shift schedules within a quick-paced manufacturing plant floor.
- Sound problem-solving abilities to troubleshoot chemistry deviations efficiently on the floor.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- First Time Right (FTR) Rate: Percentage of paint batches successfully passing QC without requiring rework.
- Turnaround Time (TAT): Average time taken to test and release raw materials and finished goods.
- Customer Complaints: Rate of post-delivery issues or defects identified by clients or the market.
