REPORTS TO: Manager SUMMARY
As a VMC Operator and Setter, you will be tasked with operating and setting up Vertical Machining Centers to create high-precision parts. This role requires expert knowledge in CNC machining, the ability to conduct precise measurements, and a keen eye for quality control.

Job Summary
The VMC Setter / Semi Setter is responsible for setting up, operating, and optimizing Vertical Machining Centers (VMC) to manufacture precision components in accordance with engineering drawings, customer specifications, and quality standards. The role involves machine setup, tooling selection, program verification, process optimization, first-off inspection, and troubleshooting while ensuring maximum productivity and minimal downtime.
The ideal candidate should possess strong knowledge of CNC machining practices, machining parameters, cutting tools, GD&T;, and precision measuring instruments. Experience in aerospace component manufacturing, machining difficult materials, and maintaining high-quality standards is highly desirable.
Key Responsibilities
Machine Setup & Operation
- Perform complete machine setup for Vertical Machining Centers (3-axis/4-axis/5-axis where applicable).
- Load, verify, and execute CNC programs.
- Install, align, and secure fixtures, jigs, vises, and work-holding devices.
- Select and install cutting tools, holders, inserts, drills, taps, end mills, and boring tools.
- Set tool offsets, work offsets, and machine parameters accurately.
- Perform dry runs and first-piece verification before production.
- Ensure machines operate safely and efficiently throughout the production cycle.
CNC Programming & Process Setup
- Develop new CNC programs for manufacturing of parts (Fanuc/Siemens/Heidenhain/Mazak or equivalent).
- Make minor program modifications for existing programs at the machine when required.
- Support CAM-generated programs by verifying machining sequences.
- Optimize feeds, speeds, depth of cut, and cutting parameters for improved productivity.
- Reduce machining cycle time while maintaining quality requirements.
- Participate in continuous process improvement initiatives.
Engineering Drawing Interpretation
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, process sheets, and work instructions.
- Understand GD&T; (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing).
- Identify critical dimensions, tolerances, datum references, and surface finish requirements.
- Verify machining operations against customer and engineering specifications.
Aerospace Component Machining
- Set and machine complex aerospace precision components.
- Work with close tolerances (micron-level accuracy where required).
- Ensure compliance with aerospace quality standards including AS9100 and customer requirements.
- Follow approved manufacturing processes and inspection plans.
Material Knowledge
Hands-on machining experience with:
- Stainless Steel (SS)
- Titanium alloys
- Aluminium alloys
- Inconel and other high-temperature alloys (preferred)
- Engineering plastics
- Polymer materials
- Composite materials
- Exotic aerospace materials
Understand machining characteristics, tool wear patterns, coolant selection, and cutting strategies for different materials.
Quality Control & Inspection
- Perform first-off, in-process, and final inspections.
- Use precision measuring instruments including:
- Vernier Caliper
- Micrometer
- Bore Gauge
- Height Gauge
- Dial Indicator
- Thread Gauges
- Pin Gauges
- Slip Gauges
- Surface Roughness Tester (preferred)
- Record inspection results accurately.
- Identify non-conforming products and initiate corrective actions.
- Ensure all manufactured parts meet drawing specifications.
Troubleshooting
- Diagnose machining issues related to:
- Tool wear
- Tool breakage
- Chatter
- Surface finish
- Dimensional deviations
- Machine alarms
- Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
- Coordinate with maintenance for machine breakdowns beyond operator-level troubleshooting.
Preventive Maintenance
- Conduct routine machine maintenance including:
- Cleaning machines
- Lubrication checks
- Coolant level monitoring
- Chip removal
- Air pressure checks
- Tool holder cleaning
- Report abnormal machine conditions immediately.
- Support preventive maintenance schedules.
Production & Documentation
- Maintain daily production reports.
- Record machine utilization and downtime.
- Maintain tooling history and offset records.
- Complete inspection reports and production documentation.
- Update job cards and process sheets accurately.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow company safety policies and PPE requirements.
- Ensure safe handling of tools, fixtures, and materials.
- Maintain 5S standards within the machining area.
- Comply with Quality Management System (QMS) procedures.
- Support AS9100, NADCAP, ISO 9001, and customer audit requirements where applicable.
Required Skills
- Strong knowledge of CNC Vertical Machining Centers.
- Excellent machine setup and troubleshooting skills.
- Understanding of cutting tools and machining parameters.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings and GD&T.;
- Knowledge of precision inspection techniques.
- Valuable understanding of production planning and workflow.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Good communication and teamwork abilities.
Preferred Technical Knowledge
- Fanuc CNC Controls (Preferred)
- Siemens Controls (Preferred)
- G-Code and M-Code editing
- Tool presetting systems
- CAM software exposure (Mastercam or equivalent)
