Company Description The National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), established in 1976, is a premier institute under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, focused on research and capacity building for the urban sector. NIUA works to bridge the gap between research and practice on issues related to urbanisation in a rapidly evolving urban India. For more than 45 years, the Institute has shaped the urban narrative by identifying and addressing key areas of concern across different scales. Through research, knowledge management, policy advocacy, and capacity building, NIUA aims to tackle urban challenges and promote sustainable, inclusive, and productive urban ecosystems across the country.
Role Description The Owner role at NIUA is a full-time, on-site position based in Current Delhi. The role involves providing strategic leadership for the Institute's vision, overseeing major research and capacity-building initiatives, and guiding long-term planning in alignment with national urban development priorities. The Owner will supervise senior leadership, ensure effective governance and resource allocation, and foster partnerships with government bodies, international organizations, and academic institutions. Daily responsibilities include reviewing key projects, monitoring institutional performance, representing NIUA in high-level forums,
and ensuring that programs advance sustainable and inclusive urban development outcomes.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated leadership experience in public policy, urban development, or related sectors, with proven ability to manage complex institutions or large programs.
- Strong strategic planning, decision-making, and organizational governance skills to guide long-term institutional growth.
- Excellent stakeholder management, communication, and negotiation skills for engaging with government agencies, partners, and the wider urban sector ecosystem.
- Solid understanding of urbanisation trends, urban policy frameworks, and sustainable development principles in the Indian and global context.
- Track record of overseeing research, policy advocacy, or capacity-building initiatives, preferably in a public sector or non-profit environment.
- Advanced degree in urban planning, public policy, governance, economics, management, or a related field; a doctorate or equivalent senior-level experience is highly desirable.
- Ability to mentor senior teams, promote inclusive and ethical work cultures, and ensure accountability in institutional processes.
- Experience representing organizations in national or international forums and engaging with diverse professional and cultural backgrounds.
