Job Description – Junior Foreman (Slitting Operator)

Position Details

Job Purpose

To operate the slitting line, ensuring secure, efficient, and quality-driven processing of stainless steel coils as per production plans and customer specifications. The role is responsible for achieving production targets, maintaining equipment efficiency, controlling quality, and managing shop-floor manpower during shifts.

Key Responsibilities:-

Production Operations

- Operate and supervise slitting line activities to achieve daily production targets.

- Ensure correct setup of slitting knives, separators, and tension settings as per job specifications.

- Monitor line speed, strip quality, slitting accuracy, and recoiling operations.

- Minimize coil changeover time and maximize machine utilization.

- Coordinate with PPC and warehouse teams for material availability.

Quality Assurance

- Verify material grade, coil dimensions, and customer requirements before processing.

- Ensure slit width tolerances and finish quality meet customer specifications.

- Monitor and control defects such as:

- Edge burrs

- Camber

- Coil telescoping

- Surface scratches

- Width variation

- Edge waviness

- Coordinate with the Quality Department for inspections and corrective actions.

Team Supervision

- Lead and guide operators, helpers, and contract workers during shifts.

- Allocate manpower effectively to achieve production schedules.

- Ensure adherence to SOPs, work instructions, and process discipline.

- Support skill development and on-the-job training of operators.

Safety & Compliance

- Ensure strict compliance with EHS guidelines and PPE usage.





- Conduct pre-shift safety checks and identify unsafe conditions.

- Report incidents, near misses, and unsafe acts promptly.

- Maintain 5S standards and housekeeping in the slitting area.

Maintenance Coordination

- Carry out routine machine inspections and basic troubleshooting.

- Coordinate with the Maintenance Department for preventive and breakdown maintenance.

- Monitor machine performance and recommend improvements to reduce downtime.

- Ensure proper handling and care of slitting tools and consumables.

Documentation & Reporting

- Maintain production reports, shift logs, and downtime records.

- Record rejection, rework, and recovery data.

- Update production status and communicate issues to the reporting manager.

- Ensure process and quality documentation is completed accurately.

Technical Skills

- Knowledge of Stainless Steel Coil Processing.

- Expertise in Slitting Line Operations and Setup.

- Understanding of coil handling systems and EOT crane operations.

- Knowledge of measuring instruments:

- Vernier Caliper

- Micrometer

- Measuring Tape

- Thickness Gauge

- Understanding of quality parameters and defect identification.

- Basic computer knowledge (MS Excel, Production Reporting).

Educational Qualification

- ITI (Mechanical/Fitter/Electrical) / Diploma in Mechanical, Production, Metallurgy or related discipline

- 12th Pass with relevant experience in Slitting Line Operations

- Technical qualification preferred

Experience

- 5–10 years of experience in Slitting Line Operations, Coil Processing, CTL (Cut-to-Length), Recoiling, or Steel Processing Industry.

Experience in Stainless Steel Processing Plants preferred.
