SENIOR MANAGER – FACTORY & OPERATIONS
Designation: Factory & Operations Manager
Company: Packrite Industries Private Limited
Location: Kolkata, West Bengal
Reports To: Director
Experience: 5+ years in printing, converting, sheeting/slitting or paper processing operations
Employment Type: Full-time
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for a hands-on operations leader to take complete charge of our printing unit and sheeting and slitting facility. The role covers day-to-day factory management, product quality as experienced by the customer, machine uptime and efficiency, raw material planning, vendor coordination, recent product development and the execution of our capacity expansion plans.
This is not a supervisory desk job. The person must be comfortable on the shop floor, willing to move between the factory and the office as the day demands, and capable of driving a team of operators, supervisors and support staff to a consistent standard of output and discipline.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Day-to-Day Factory Management
- Own the daily running of the printing, sheeting and slitting operations — manpower deployment, shift planning, job scheduling and dispatch readiness.
- Ensure the plan for the day is issued, followed and reviewed; drive the closure of gaps between planned and actual output.
- Maintain housekeeping, safety, statutory compliance and discipline on the shop floor.
- Manage contract labour, supervisors and operators; handle attendance, productivity, skill development and grievance resolution.
Quality
- Own product quality as the customer experiences it — print quality, registration, colour consistency, GSM, dimensional accuracy, edge quality, reel and pallet presentation.
- Establish and enforce in-process checks, first-article approval and final inspection before dispatch.
- Investigate customer complaints to root cause, implement corrective and preventive action, and close the loop with the sales team and the customer.
- Maintain documentation and readiness for customer audits and food-grade / hygiene requirements applicable to the food and beverage supply chain.
Machine Runtime & Efficiency
- Track and improve machine uptime, OEE, speed, changeover time, wastage and rejection percentage against defined targets.
- Establish and enforce preventive maintenance schedules; manage breakdown response, spares planning and critical spare inventory.
- Reduce make-ready time, ink and substrate wastage and start-up waste through standard operating procedures and operator training.
- Maintain daily production, wastage and downtime MIS and review it with management.
Expansion & New Machinery
- Assist management in evaluating new machinery — technical specification, vendor comparison, capacity and cost-benefit justification.
- Manage installation, commissioning, trial runs, operator training and stabilisation of new equipment.
- Plan layout, utilities, manpower and material flow for expanded capacity.
Vendor Coordination & Plate Making
- Coordinate the entire pre-press and plate making cycle — artwork receipt, proofing, cylinder and plate vendors, approvals and timely availability against the production plan.
- Develop and manage vendors for inks, chemicals, adhesives, cores, packing material, job work and machine spares; negotiate rates and monitor service levels.
- Manage job work operations sent outside the unit and ensure quality and timelines are met.
Raw Material Planning & Inventory
- Plan raw material requirements against the order book and forecast; raise timely indents to avoid both stock-outs and excess inventory.
- Control inventory of paper, inks,
consumables and spares; maintain accurate stock records and reconcile physical stock periodically.
- Monitor and reduce material yield loss, trim waste and rejections.
Product Development
- Work with the sales team on customer requirements for new products, substrates and finishes; run trials, establish process parameters and cost the product.
- Convert successful trials into standardised, repeatable production processes with documented specifications.
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS
Essential
- Diploma or Degree in Printing Technology, Packaging Technology, Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent technical qualification.
- 5+ years of experience in a printing, converting, sheeting/slitting or paper processing unit, with at least 2 years in an independent factory or operations charge.
- Sound working knowledge of printing processes, plate and cylinder making, colour management, sheeting and slitting operations and associated machinery.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and drive a shop floor team and hold people to standards.
- Strong planning and coordination skills; comfort with production MIS, Excel and ERP systems.
- Willingness to be present at the factory as operations require, including at short notice, and to travel between the factory and the corporate office.
Preferred
- Experience with flexographic printing units.
- Exposure to commissioning new machinery and to capacity expansion projects.
WHAT WE OFFER
- Full operational ownership of a growing manufacturing unit, with direct reporting to management.
- The opportunity to build and lead the team through a period of capacity expansion.
