The Lactation Counsellor is responsible for providing evidence-based breastfeeding education, counselling, and clinical support to antenatal and postnatal mothers. The role aims to promote successful breastfeeding, address lactation challenges, and improve maternal and newborn health outcomes in accordance with hospital protocols and international best practices. IBCLC professionals provide specialized lactation care, while BPNI-certified counsellors deliver structured breastfeeding and infant feeding counselling within their training and institutional scope.

Key ResponsibilitiesAntenatal Care

- Educate expectant mothers and families on breastfeeding advantages and techniques.
- Conduct breastfeeding preparation classes.
- Address common myths and concerns related to breastfeeding.

Postnatal Lactation Support

- Assist mothers in initiating breastfeeding within the first hour after birth whenever clinically appropriate.
- Assess breastfeeding technique, positioning, attachment, and milk transfer.




- Support exclusive breastfeeding and rooming-in practices.
- Counsel mothers following normal delivery and caesarean section.

Counselling & Education

- Provide individualized counselling for mothers and family members.
- Educate on exclusive breastfeeding for six months and continued breastfeeding with complementary feeding.
- Promote skin-to-skin care and responsive feeding.
- Conduct awareness programs for hospital staff and the community.

1–3 years of experience in lactation counselling, maternity, NICU, postnatal ward, or women & child healthcare preferred.

Certification in Lactation Counselling from IBLS or BPNI (Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India).
