Job Purpose To supervise and coordinate all nursing activities in the Critical Care Unit by ensuring safe, evidence-based, patient-centered care while maintaining compliance with hospital policies, infection control standards, and quality requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Ensure safe and quality nursing care for critically ill patients.
- Supervise assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care.
- Monitor adherence to ICU protocols, nursing standards, and clinical guidelines.
- Coordinate with intensivists and multidisciplinary teams for effective patient management.
- Ensure timely administration of medications and accurate documentation.
- Participate in emergency response and code blue management.
Patient Safety & Quality
- Ensure compliance with patient safety goals and nursing quality indicators.
- Monitor ICU infection prevention and control practices.
- Conduct bedside audits and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
- Report incidents, adverse events, and near misses as per hospital policy.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and clinical audits.
Staff Management
- Prepare duty rosters and manage staffing requirements.
- Supervise, mentor, and guide ICU nursing staff.
- Conduct orientation and competency assessments for new nurses.
- Evaluate staff performance and identify training needs.
- Promote teamwork and professional conduct.
Equipment & Inventory
- Ensure ICU equipment is functional and calibrated.
- Monitor availability of emergency drugs and crash carts.
- Coordinate preventive maintenance of biomedical equipment.
- Maintain adequate stock of consumables and critical supplies.
Documentation
- Verify completeness and accuracy of nursing documentation.
- Maintain ICU registers, reports, and departmental records.
- Ensure confidentiality of patient information.
Infection Control
- Ensure strict adherence to hand hygiene practices.
- Monitor biomedical waste segregation and disposal.
- Ensure compliance with isolation precautions and PPE usage.
- Coordinate surveillance activities with the Infection Control Team.
Training & Education
- Conduct regular departmental training programs.
- Organize mock drills and emergency preparedness sessions.
- Promote evidence-based nursing practices and continuous learning.
Communication
- Coordinate with consultants, nursing administration, pharmacy, laboratory, and other support services.
- Participate in departmental meetings and quality review meetings.
- Communicate effectively with patients' families regarding nursing care as appropriate.
