About the role
We run a 3D printing workshop that handles everything from collectible figurines and display sculptures to functional mechanical parts and enclosures. We're looking for a 3D designer who can take a request a photo, a rough sketch, a reference model, a broken part, or just a verbal brief and turn it into a file that comes off the printer clean, first time.
This is not a pure visual-art job. Renders that look great on screen and fail on the build plate don't help us. We want someone who thinks in wall thicknesses, overhangs, tolerances, and support strategy while they model.
What you'll be doing
- Model original parts and assets from briefs, sketches, reference images, or physical samples
- Sculpt organic work — figurines, busts, character models, decorative and display pieces
- Model hard-surface and mechanical work — brackets, housings, enclosures, jigs, fixtures, replacement parts, functional assemblies
- Repair and modify existing files: fixing non-manifold geometry, flipped normals, holes, self-intersections, and bad topology in client-supplied models
- Rescale, remix, and adapt existing models to recent dimensions or new use cases
- Prepare files for production — hollowing, drain holes, wall thickness checks, part splitting, keying/alignment pins, escape holes, and sensible orientation
- Cut models into printable sections for pieces larger than the build volume, with clean joins
- Work with the print team on iteration: review failed or imperfect prints, diagnose whether it's a design issue or a print issue, and revise
- Maintain an organised, versioned, well-named internal library of source files and print-ready exports
What we're looking for
Core skills
- Strong command of at least one primary 3D package. We use and accept Blender, 3ds Max, ZBrush, Fusion 360, SolidWorks,
Rhino, Maya, or similar — we care about output, not brand loyalty
- Comfort across both worlds: you can sculpt something organic and model something dimensionally accurate. If you're stronger in one, be honest about which — we'll weigh it
- Genuine understanding of design for additive manufacturing (DFAM): overhang angles, bridging, minimum feature size, wall thickness, layer adhesion and part orientation relative to load
- Ability to design functional clearances and tolerances for parts that fit together, snap, thread, or move
- Producing watertight, manifold, correctly scaled meshes as a matter of habit
- Working knowledge of at least one slicer — Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer, Cura, Chitubox, Lychee — enough to sanity-check your own file before handing it over
- Fluency with STL, 3MF, OBJ, STEP, and when each is the right export
- Reading and working from basic dimensioned drawings and measurements
How you work
- Accurate with measurements. Millimetres matter here
- Able to take feedback on a print that didn't work and iterate without ego
- Organised with files and clear in written communication about what changed between versions
- Able to estimate how long a model will take and flag early when a brief is unrealistic
Nice to have
- Experience with FDM and resin (SLA/DLP) workflows and the different design rules each demands
- Retopology and mesh optimisation for heavy scan or sculpt data
- Reverse engineering from callipers, photographs, or 3D scan data
- Parametric CAD experience for parts that need dimension-driven revisions
- Texturing, painting, and rendering for client previews and product listings
- Multi-material or multi-colour print design (AMS/MMU)
- Familiarity with generative or topology-optimised design approaches
- Post-processing knowledge — sanding, priming, painting, smoothing — and designing with it in mind
- Basic scripting (Python for Blender/Fusion) to automate repetitive modelling tasks

1. A portfolio — link to ArtStation, Behance, a personal site, Printables/MakerWorld/Thingiverse, or a PDF. Please include at least a few pieces that were actually printed, with photos of the printed result alongside the model.
2. A short note covering: your primary software, whether you lean organic or hard-surface, and the trickiest thing you've designed for printing and why it was tricky.
3. Your availability and expected compensation.
Please don't send a portfolio of renders only. We want to see things that came off a printer.
How we evaluate
Shortlisted candidates get a small paid test task — a real brief from our queue, typically one organic piece and one functional piece, with a few days to complete. We assess printability, dimensional accuracy, file hygiene, and how you handle a follow-up revision request.
