Create detailed 2D production drawings and 3D CAD models for press tools, including progressive dies, compound dies, blanking/piercing tools, forming dies, and deep drawing tools.
- Strip Layout &
- Feasibility:
Develop and validate strip layouts to optimize material yield, reduce scrap, and ensure feasibility prior to tool construction.
- Engineering Calculations: Perform tonnage, cutting force, bending allowance, springback, and clearance calculations to ensure proper machine sizing and long tool life.
- Documentation &
- Standards:
Apply Geometric Dimensioning &
- Tolerancing (GD&T;) principles, maintaining complete design documentation and bill of materials (BOM).
- Tool Trials &
- Troubleshooting:
Support toolmakers during initial tool assembly, try-outs, and component sampling.
Analyze root causes of stamping defects and adjust tool designs as needed.
- Maintenance &
- Design Revisions:
Update existing tooling designs to improve performance, implement continuous improvements, and fix recurring wear or failure points.
- Manufacturing Alignment: Collaborate with tool room machinists and wire-cut/EDM operators to ensure designs match internal manufacturing capabilities.
Qualifications &
- Education
- Education: ITI – Tool &
- Die maker or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering
- Experience: 3–7+ years of hands-on experience in press tool design within a sheet metal manufacturing or stamping setting.
