Position Summary
The School Librarian is responsible for managing the school library as a dynamic learning resource center that supports academic learning and encourages reading habits among students from Classes I to X. The role focuses on promoting literacy, curiosity, research skills, and a lifelong love for reading.
The ideal candidate should be organized, student-friendly, and passionate about books, reading culture, and information management, with the ability to engage students across age groups.
Key Responsibilities
1. Library Management & Operations
- Manage day-to-day functioning of the school library.
- Maintain systematic arrangement and classification of books, journals, and reference materials.
- Ensure proper cataloguing, indexing, and record maintenance of all library resources.
- Oversee issuance, return, and tracking of books for students and staff.
- Maintain discipline, cleanliness, and a quiet learning environment in the library.
2. Collection Development & Resource Management
- Maintain and update the library collection regularly.
- Recommend current books, magazines, and reference materials aligned with CBSE curriculum and student interests.
- Ensure availability of age-appropriate reading materials for Classes I to X.
- Maintain records of damaged, lost, or outdated books and initiate replacements.
- Organize books into fiction, non-fiction, reference, and subject-wise categories.
3. Promoting Reading Culture
- Encourage reading habits among students through structured library periods.
- Conduct storytelling sessions, book talks, and reading activities.
- Organize reading challenges, book reviews, and literature-based competitions.
- Promote age-appropriate authors, genres, and literary works.
- Build a strong reading culture across all classes.
4. Student Engagement & Learning Support
- Guide students in selecting appropriate books based on reading levels and interests.
- Assist students in developing research and reference skills.
- Support academic learning by providing relevant reference materials.
- Help students improve comprehension, vocabulary, and language skills through reading.
- Encourage independent learning habits through library use.
5. Digital Library & Information Skills
- Manage digital library resources if applicable.
- Introduce students to basic information literacy and research skills.
- Support use of e-books, educational databases, and digital reading tools.
- Maintain updated records using library management software.
- Promote responsible use of digital resources.
6. Library Periods & Instructional Support
- Conduct scheduled library periods for all classes.
- Guide students in reading, summarizing, and book selection activities.
- Teach basic library usage skills including catalog search and referencing.
- Integrate library activities with classroom learning.
- Support teachers with relevant reading materials for lessons.
7. Event Organization & Literacy Programs
- Organize events such as Book Week, Reading Week, and Library Day.
- Conduct storytelling competitions, debates, quizzes, and literary activities.
- Support school cultural and academic events with reading-based programs.
- Display thematic book exhibitions and author spotlights.
- Encourage student participation in literacy enrichment programs.
8. Record Keeping & Administration
- Maintain accurate records of books issued and returned.
- Keep inventory of library resources and update regularly.
- Prepare monthly and annual library usage reports.
- Manage library fines, lost books, and replacement procedures.
- Ensure compliance with school library policies.
9. Classroom & Library Discipline
- Maintain silence, order, and discipline within the library.
- Ensure proper handling and care of books and resources.
- Promote respectful behavior among students in the library.
- Monitor student activities during library periods.
- Create a calm and focused learning environment.
10. Collaboration with Teachers & Staff
- Coordinate with subject teachers to support curriculum needs.
- Provide reference materials for academic projects and assignments.
- Assist in research-based learning activities.
- Collaborate in planning reading-based academic programs.
- Support school-wide literacy development initiatives.
11. Parent Communication & Engagement
- Encourage parents to promote reading habits at home.
- Share updates on student reading progress when required.
- Recommend age-appropriate reading materials for home use.
- Support reading culture beyond the school environment.
- Maintain professional communication with parents when necessary.

Maintenance & Resource Organization
- Ensure proper upkeep of library infrastructure and furniture.
- Maintain cleanliness, seating arrangement, and accessibility.
- Organize shelves and reading zones for easy navigation.
- Ensure safe storage of rare or reference materials.
- Report maintenance requirements to school administration.
Required Qualifications
Educational Qualification
- Bachelors Degree in Library Science (B.Lib / B.Lib.Sc) (mandatory).
- Master’s Degree in Library Science (M.Lib / M.Lib.Sc) will be preferred.
- Basic knowledge of computer applications and library software is required.
Experience
- Minimum 2–5 years of experience as a school librarian preferred.
- Experience in CBSE schools or educational institutions is an advantage.
- Freshers with strong academic background in Library Science may be considered.
