As the company continues to grow, it is seeking an experienced Litigation Manager to establish a robust litigation management framework and provide strategic oversight of all legal disputes.
Position Summary:
The General Manager Litigation shall be responsible for the end-to-end management of the Company's litigation portfolio, including commercial disputes, arbitration, contract claims, labour matters, taxation, banking, regulatory proceedings and recovery actions.
The role requires solid commercial judgment, excellent litigation management capabilities and extensive experience in coordinating with external advocates, internal business teams and senior management. The incumbent will establish systems, processes and governance to ensure effective management of legal risks while protecting the Company's commercial interests
Role & responsibilities :
1. Litigation Management
- Manage the Company's entire litigation portfolio across India.
- Develop and maintain a centralized Litigation Management System covering all legal matters.
- Monitor progress of all pending litigation and ensure timely action.
- Track court hearings, statutory deadlines, appeals and compliance requirements.
- Review legal strategies for all significant matters.
2. Arbitration & Commercial Disputes
- Manage domestic and international arbitration matters.
- Coordinate preparation of claims, counterclaims and evidence.
- Assist project teams in contractual dispute resolution.
- Recommend litigation, arbitration or settlement strategies based on commercial considerations.
- Protect the Company's contractual rights under EPC and supply contracts.
3. External Counsel Management
- Coordinate and supervise external law firms and advocates.
- Review pleadings, written statements, affidavits and legal opinions.
- Monitor performance of external counsel.
- Control legal costs and optimize litigation expenditure.
- Maintain a panel of competent advocates across jurisdictions.
4. Legal Risk Management
- Identify high-risk litigation requiring senior management attention.
- Prepare legal risk assessments and exposure analyses.
- Recommend mitigation measures.
- Maintain a Red-Amber-Green (RAG) classification of litigation based on financial exposure and business impact.
5. Claims & Recoveries
- Drive recovery of outstanding dues through legal proceedings.
- Coordinate with commercial and finance teams for recovery actions.
- Monitor arbitration awards and execution proceedings.
- Track bank guarantees, retention money and contractual claims.
6. Documentation & Evidence Management
- Ensure proper preservation of contracts, correspondence, technical documents and evidence.
- Develop a centralized digital repository for litigation records.
- Coordinate with project teams to obtain technical inputs and supporting documentation.
7. Management Reporting
- Prepare monthly litigation dashboards for senior management.
- Present updates on significant litigation, financial exposure and key developments.
- Maintain a comprehensive litigation register covering all legal matters.
Internal Coordination
- Work closely with Engineering, Projects, Contracts, Procurement, Finance, HR and Commercial teams.
- Provide legal support during dispute resolution.
- Assist in settlement negotiations wherever commercially appropriate.
Key Deliverables:
- Complete Litigation Register covering all pending and future matters.
- Litigation Management Information System (MIS).
- Monthly litigation dashboard.
- Quarterly legal risk report.
- External counsel performance evaluation system.
- Digital legal document repository.
- Legal expenditure monitoring system.
- Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for litigation management
Preferred candidate profile:
Education:
- LL.B. from a recognized university (mandatory).
- LL.M. or specialization in Business/Commercial Law (preferred).
- Additional qualifications in Arbitration, Construction Law, or Contract Management will be an advantage
Experience:
- 20 to 30 years of relevant experience.
- Minimum 10 years in a leadership role managing litigation.
- Experience in EPC, Power, Infrastructure, Manufacturing, Construction or Heavy Engineering sectors.
- Proven experience in handling large commercial disputes and arbitration.
- Experience coordinating multiple external advocates across jurisdictions.
