Position: Head Environment

Reporting To: Unit Head / CEO – Mining
Role Purpose To provide strategic leadership for environmental management across Jindal Power's captive coal mining operations, ensuring full compliance with statutory requirements while driving sustainable mining practices, biodiversity conservation, mine reclamation, environmental monitoring, and stakeholder engagement. The incumbent shall lead the environmental function to achieve operational excellence, regulatory compliance, and ESG objectives.
Key Responsibilities
1. Environmental Compliance & Governance
- Ensure compliance with Environmental Clearance (EC), Forest Clearance (FC), Consent to Operate (CTO), Consent to Establish (CTE), Wildlife, and Pollution Control Board requirements.
- Liaise with MoEFCC, SEIAA, CPCB, SPCB, Forest Department, DGMS, IBM, and other statutory authorities.
- Ensure timely submission of statutory reports, compliance reports, environmental statements, and regulatory returns.
- Coordinate environmental audits and inspections by regulatory agencies.
1. Mine Environmental Management
- Develop and implement Environmental Management Plans (EMP) for opencast coal mines.
- Monitor air quality, water quality, noise, vibration, soil quality, and ecological parameters.
- Drive dust suppression initiatives through mechanized sprinkling systems, mist cannons, haul road maintenance, and green barriers.
- Oversee overburden dump stabilization and erosion control measures.
- Ensure scientific topsoil management and conservation.
1. Mine Closure & Land Reclamation
- Lead progressive mine closure activities in line with approved Mine Closure Plans.
- Plan and monitor afforestation, avenue plantation, and ecological restoration.
- Ensure successful rehabilitation of mined-out areas.
- Monitor survival percentage of plantations and biodiversity enhancement initiatives.
1. Water & Waste Management
- Develop sustainable mine water management systems.
- Monitor mine discharge quality and ensure compliance with prescribed standards.
- Optimize rainwater harvesting and water conservation initiatives.
- Manage hazardous waste, used oil, e-waste, biomedical waste, and solid waste in accordance with applicable regulations.
1. Environmental Monitoring
- Lead continuous environmental monitoring programs.
- Analyze environmental data and recommend preventive and corrective actions.
- Ensure third-party environmental monitoring through NABL-accredited laboratories.
- Drive digital environmental monitoring and reporting systems.
1. ESG & Sustainability
- Drive sustainability initiatives aligned with corporate ESG objectives.
- Prepare sustainability data for ESG reporting and statutory disclosures.
- Promote carbon footprint reduction, resource efficiency, water conservation, and circular economy initiatives.
- Support renewable energy and decarbonization projects wherever applicable.
1. Stakeholder & Community Engagement
- Coordinate with local communities regarding environmental issues.
- Address environmental concerns raised by villagers, Gram Sabhas, and district administration.
- Support public hearings and statutory consultations for new mining projects and expansions.
- Build positive relationships with regulatory authorities and external stakeholders.
1. Team Leadership
- Lead and mentor the Environment Department.
- Develop competency-building initiatives for environmental personnel.
- Foster a culture of environmental excellence and continuous improvement.
1. Risk Management
- Identify environmental risks associated with mining operations.
- Develop mitigation strategies and emergency response plans.
- Conduct periodic environmental risk assessments.
1. Continuous Improvement
- Benchmark environmental best practices within the mining industry.
- Introduce innovative technologies for pollution prevention and environmental monitoring.
- Drive ISO 14001 Environmental Management System implementation and continual improvement.

- Zero major environmental non-compliance.
- 100% statutory compliance and timely reporting.
- Successful renewal of all environmental approvals and consents.

Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Engineering / Environmental Science / Forestry / Mining Engineering.
- Master's Degree in Environmental Engineering / Environmental Management / Environmental Science preferred.
Experience
- 18–25 years of experience in environmental management within large opencast coal mining operations.
- Minimum 8 years in a leadership role.
- Experience with captive coal mines supplying thermal power plants will be highly preferred.
- Strong exposure to regulatory liaison, environmental clearances, and mine reclamation.
