Junior DevOps Engineer Location: India | Hybrid About the Company Workpay is one of Africa's fastest-growing payroll solutions providers, helping global businesses hire, manage, and pay employees efficiently, legally, and compliantly across the continent. Our payroll, compliance, and workforce financial services platform simplifies payroll, compliance, benefits, and workforce administration, enabling organizations to focus on growth while ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time. Backed by leading global investors such as Visa, Norrsken22, Y Combinator,
Acadian Ventures, Google for Startups, and Verod-Kepple, Workpay supports businesses operating in 30+ African countries. As we continue to expand our footprint across Africa and beyond, building the right team across markets is critical to sustaining our growth.
Role Overview We are looking for a Junior DevOps / Platform
Engineer to support the reliability, scalability, security, and operational maturity of Workpay's cloud infrastructure. In this role, you will help support and improve our current Cloud Run-based services while assisting the team in maturing our GKE Autopilot environment for mission-critical workloads. You will work closely with engineering, security, QA, and data teams and alongside senior platform engineers to improve deployment reliability, platform resilience, observability, infrastructure automation, and compliance readiness.
This is a hands-on role for someone early in their DevOps career who is eager to operate production systems,
build strong platform fundamentals, and grow into greater ownership over time, with mentorship from senior engineers on the team. What
You Will Own Cloud Infrastructure and Platform Operations Help maintain, secure, and optimize Workpay's cloud infrastructure across Google Cloud, Cloud Run, and GKE, under the guidance of senior engineers. Support improvements to the reliability and scalability of production services, including application runtime environments, networking, service configuration, and infrastructure automation. Assist in the transition of selected workloads from serverless and VM-based environments into containerized and
Kubernetes-based platforms where appropriate. Reliability and
Availability Contribute to platform resilience through monitoring,
alerting, incident response support, disaster recovery readiness,
and post-incident reviews. Help support high availability and recovery objectives for critical services, including payroll,
payments, authentication, and compliance workflows. Support reliability practices that improve uptime, reduce deployment-related incidents, and strengthen rollback and recovery processes.
Infrastructure as Code and Automation Help build and maintain infrastructure using Terraform and other automation tools,
following established patterns. Contribute to reusable templates,
standards, and deployment patterns that make it easier for engineering teams to ship safely and consistently. Support the reduction of manual operational work through automation,
documentation, and self-service platform improvements. CI/CD and
Developer Experience Support and help improve GitLab-based CI/CD workflows alongside senior engineers. Work with engineering and QA teams to improve release confidence, deployment speed, setting consistency, and rollback readiness. Help embed quality, security,
and operational checks into the delivery pipeline without unnecessarily slowing down product delivery. Observability and
Incident Response Help maintain and improve observability across logs, metrics, traces, and alerts using tools such as Prometheus,
Grafana, Loki, Tempo, New Relic, or equivalent platforms. Support response to infrastructure incidents, escalating complex issues to senior engineers as needed. Contribute to post-incident actions that reduce repeat failures and improve system design. Security and
Compliance Work with the security team to help embed secure infrastructure practices across cloud identity, secrets management,
configuration, network controls, and CI/CD pipelines. Support compliance requirements aligned to ISO 27001, SOC 2 readiness, data protection, and audit evidence collection. Help engineering teams adopt security-first practices without creating unnecessary delivery friction. Data and Stateful Workloads Support the operational lifecycle of databases, caches, queues, and event-driven infrastructure. Contribute to availability, backup,
PITR, monitoring, and disaster recovery practices for critical data services. Exposure to PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, Kafka, or equivalent systems is valuable.
Experience Bachelor's degree in
Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent practical experience operating production cloud platforms. 2–3 years of experience in DevOps, Platform Engineering,
Site Reliability Engineering, Cloud Engineering, or a similar role.
Hands-on experience operating production systems on Google Cloud or another major cloud provider.
Some experience with containerized workloads and Kubernetes; exposure to GKE or GKE Autopilot is a plus. Exposure to serverless platforms such as Google Cloud Run or equivalent managed runtime environments. Working knowledge of
Infrastructure as Code, preferably Terraform. Experience contributing to CI/CD pipelines, preferably using GitLab CI/CD.
Basic understanding of production observability, including metrics,
logs, traces, dashboards, and alerting. Some exposure to supporting databases, caches, queues, or other stateful infrastructure in production environments. Foundational understanding of cloud security practices, including IAM, secrets management, network controls, and secure deployment practices.
Ability to troubleshoot production issues across application, infrastructure, network, and database layers, with support from senior team members. Ability to work cross-functionally with engineering, security, QA, and data teams. Good documentation and communication skills.
Nice to Have
Experience with Google cloudrun, GKE Autopilot in production.
Experience with Kubernetes Operators such as CloudNativePG, Percona
Operator, or similar tooling.
Experience with HashiCorp Vault,
Consul, Kafka, Redis Sentinel, PostgreSQL high availability,
MongoDB, or equivalent platforms.
Experience supporting Laravel
PHP, Java, or modernization of legacy applications. Experience working in FinTech, payroll, HRTech, payments, or regulated SaaS environments.
Experience supporting ISO 27001, SOC 2, GDPR, or similar compliance requirements.
What Success Looks Like
Production services are more reliable, observable, and easier to recover.
Deployment pipelines become safer, faster, and more consistent.
Engineering teams have clearer platform standards and better self-service capabilities. Infrastructure risks are identified earlier and addressed systematically. Cloud infrastructure supports business growth without unnecessary cost, complexity, or operational fragility.
Security and compliance requirements are embedded into platform operations rather than treated as afterthoughts. The engineer grows steadily in scope and independence, building toward greater ownership of platform areas over time.
What We Offer Competitive, incentive-based remuneration,
employee stock options and health cover. Purpose driven work. We are building the rails for employment payments and compliance across Africa, helping drive economic growth and development.
Career advancement through constant opportunities for learning and growth. Working in a flexible, vibrant team environment with a flexible remote work policy.
