About the role:
We are seeking an enthusiastic, committed legal qualified with a passion for social justice, specifically in
labor rights
. The Program Officer (Legal) will be responsible for providing legal support, resolving worker cases, and managing/mentoring the helpline and field teams in their respective regions (South, West, or North).
The ability to represent workers in court (especially in the Bengaluru region) is highly desirable.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Operational & Programmatic Management
Provide supervision, training, and guidance to a team of Case Managers and field teams.
Monitor team activities and performance related to outreach, legal aid, and mediation.
Coordinate activities between field teams and the central team.
Conceptualize and deliver capacity-building programs (online and in-person) for field teams.
Oversee and process data from MIS systems for strategic and operational analysis.
Manage the operations of the multi-lingual helpline and shift rosters of Case Managers.
2. Legal Work and Systemic Change
Litigation Support:
Prepare and support legal claims in labor courts; represent or coordinate representation of workers before relevant authorities.
Stakeholder Engagement:
Liaise with police, labor departments, and State Legal Services Authorities; ensure case follow-up with public institutions.




Legal Strategy:
Document recurring legal issues and develop long-term legal strategies to propose systemic solutions for poor workplace practices.
Legal Literacy:
Design and implement legal education modules for workers and conduct field visits for training sessions.
Partnership:
Collaborate with legal networks, lawyers, trade unions, and civil society organizations to expand legal aid outreach.
Required Qualifications and Skills:
Law Degree
required, with full-time work experience of at least
3 to 5 years
in a non-profit or legal organization.
Preference will be given to candidates with experience in labor or legal aid programs.
Litigation experience
(especially in labor or human rights law) is strongly preferred. Must be registered with the bar.
Willingness to travel regularly
to field locations is essential.
Ability to interact effectively with teams; strong people-orientation and social media competence.
Familiarity with MIS and data tools for processing information.
Language Proficiency (Essential):
Bengaluru Candidates:
Fluency in English, Hindi, and one or two South Indian languages (Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, or Malayalam).
Mumbai/Delhi Candidates:
Fluency in English and Hindi.
