Job Description

Who We Are

CivicDataLab (CDL) works at the intersection of data, technology, design, and social science to strengthen access to public information, evidence-based decision-making, and citizen participation in governance. CDL harnesses the potential of open knowledge movements to strengthen the data-for-public-good ecosystem and enable citizens to engage in matters of public reform. We work closely with governments, non-profits, think tanks, and universities to enhance their data and technology capacity to enable data-driven decision-making at scale.

Our Commitment to Diversity

We are committed to inclusive hiring and strongly encourage applicants from diverse and under-represented gender and caste identities and/or socio-cultural backgrounds to apply for this fellowship. Our organisational policies are gender-neutral, including the POSH policy.

What Are We Looking For?

We are currently looking for a Communications Fellow to support CivicDataLab’s communications, outreach, and storytelling efforts across projects, programmes, and convening.

This is a full-time, in-person fellowship role suited for early-career professionals who are interested in public-interest technology, data-for-positive, and social impact communications. The fellow will work closely with the Communications & Outreach Manager and programme teams to assist in creating content, managing platforms, supporting events, and strengthening engagement with our community and partners.

We are looking for someone with up to 6 months – 1 year of prior experience (including internships, fellowships, or student-led work) in communications, media, design, journalism, development communications, or related fields.

Note: Candidates currently pursuing their degree are not eligible to apply, as this is a full-time, in-person position.

On completion of the fellowship period, the candidate may be considered for a full-time role based on performance, organisational needs, and mutual interest.

Requirements

- 1-2 years of experience,

or strong demonstrated interest, in communications, media, social impact, public policy, or public-interest work.

- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Policy, Social Sciences, Liberal Arts, Development Studies, Design, or a related field. Exceptional candidates from other disciplines with demonstrated communications experience are welcome to apply.

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

- Demonstrated ownership and ability to independently manage tasks from planning to execution.

- Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise multiple assignments and consistently meet deadlines.

- High attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality work.

- Interest in data, AI, governance, public policy, climate, gender, or social impact.

- Familiarity with Google Workspace (Docs, Slides, Sheets), Canva, MailChimp and major social media platforms.

- Willingness to learn content strategy, storytelling, design workflows, and digital campaigns

- Comfortable working in a collaborative, fast-paced, predominantly in-person environment with multiple stakeholders.

Good to have

-
Experience managing social media accounts, newsletters, websites, or communication campaigns.

-
Experience with student publications, research organisations, NGOs, think tanks, or college societies.

-
Graphic design, video editing, or multimedia storytelling skills.

-
Exposure to the development sector, governance, public policy, or civic technology.
