The ICU In-Charge is responsible for the overall clinical, operational, and administrative management of the Intensive Care Unit. The role ensures the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based nursing care to critically ill patients while maintaining compliance with hospital policies, NABH standards, infection prevention protocols, and patient safety practices. The ICU In-Charge provides leadership to the nursing team, coordinates multidisciplinary care, and ensures optimal utilization of resources.

Key Responsibilities1. Clinical Management

- Ensure protected and effective nursing care for critically ill patients.
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care.
- Monitor patient condition and ensure timely escalation of clinical concerns.
- Supervise medication administration and adherence to the "Five Rights" of medication.
- Ensure proper use and monitoring of life-support equipment, including ventilators, infusion pumps, syringe pumps, monitors, and defibrillators.
- Coordinate emergency interventions, including Code Blue and Rapid Response Team activities.
- Ensure continuity of patient care during shift handovers.

2. Leadership & Staff Supervision

- Lead, mentor, and supervise ICU nursing personnel.
- Prepare and manage duty rosters and staffing allocation.
- Monitor staff attendance, punctuality, and discipline.
- Conduct orientation and competency assessments for new employees.
- Guide and support staff in handling critical clinical situations.
- Foster teamwork and effective communication within the multidisciplinary team.

3. Quality & NABH Compliance

- Ensure compliance with NABH standards and hospital quality policies.
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation.
- Monitor quality indicators such as:
- ICU infection rates
- Medication errors
- Patient falls
- Pressure injuries
- Incident reporting
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and internal audits.
- Implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).

Infection Prevention & Patient Safety

- Ensure strict compliance with infection control practices.
- Monitor hand hygiene compliance.
- Ensure adherence to isolation protocols.
- Coordinate with the Infection Control Team.
- Ensure biomedical waste segregation as per regulations.

5. Equipment & Inventory Management

- Ensure ICU equipment is functional and calibrated.
- Monitor availability of emergency drugs and crash cart readiness.
- Coordinate preventive maintenance with the Biomedical Department.
- Maintain adequate stock of consumables and medications.

6. Documentation & Reporting

- Verify nursing documentation for completeness and accuracy.
- Maintain ICU registers and statutory records.
- Prepare daily census and occupancy reports.
- Report clinical incidents, adverse events, and sentinel events promptly.

7. Patient & Family Communication

- Support physicians in communicating patient status to relatives.
- Address patient and family concerns professionally.
- Promote patient-centered care and satisfaction.

8. Training & Education

- Conduct regular in-service education and skill training.
- Organize mock drills (Code Blue, Fire Safety, Disaster Management).
- Ensure staff competency in ICU procedures and emergency protocols.
- Identify training needs and recommend continuous professional development.

9. Coordination

- Coordinate with:
- Consultants and Intensivists
- Emergency Department
- Operation Theatre
- Laboratory
- Radiology
- Pharmacy
- Biomedical Engineering
- Housekeeping
- CSSD
- Quality Department
- Infection Control Team

Qualifications

- B.Sc. Nursing / Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing / M.Sc. Nursing.
- Valid State Nursing Council Registration.
- Certification in BLS and ACLS (mandatory).

Experience

- Minimum 5–8 years of clinical nursing experience.
- At least 2–3 years of experience in ICU supervision or as ICU In-Charge in a multispecialty hospital.
