Summary:

The Design Lead – S&T; (Signalling & Telecom) plays a pivotal role in shaping the safety, reliability, and performance of railway signalling and telecommunications systems within major rail infrastructure projects. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, this position is responsible for leading end-to-end design activities across complex Signalling & Telecom (S&T;) systems, ensuring full alignment with national and international standards including IRS, RDSO, CENELEC, IEC, and project-specific technical requirements. The Design Lead will oversee the development, review, and approval of system architecture, technical drawings, calculations, and specifications, while ensuring robust safety integration and compliance throughout the project lifecycle. This role demands robust leadership, technical depth, and cross-functional coordination with clients, consultants, OEMs, and internal engineering teams. The individual will drive design excellence by managing risks, leading safety-critical reviews such as HAZOP and safety audits,

and maintaining rigorous design change control processes. With 14 years of experience in railway/metro S&T; projects and a minimum of 5 years in a design leadership capacity, the ideal candidate will be instrumental in delivering mission-critical, future-ready rail systems that meet the highest standards of operational safety, performance, and regulatory compliance.

Requirements

Responsibilities:

- Lead end-to-end design activities for Signalling & Telecom systems across railway and metro projects.

- Own and deliver system-level design for Signalling, Telecom, and OCC (Operations Control Centre) interfaces, ensuring seamless integration and interoperability.

- Review, validate, and approve system architecture, technical drawings, engineering calculations, and detailed specifications.

- Ensure full compliance with applicable standards including IRS, RDSO, CENELEC, IEC, and project-specific technical requirements.

- Coordinate and align design deliverables with clients, consultants, OEMs, and multidisciplinary internal engineering teams.

- Manage design risks, lead safety justification documentation, and implement effective design change control procedures.

- Lead and participate in design reviews, HAZOP studies, safety audits, and other safety-critical assessments.

- Mentor and guide junior design engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement.

- Maintain traceability and documentation of design decisions, approvals, and compliance throughout the project lifecycle.

- Act as the primary technical authority for S&T; system design during project execution and handover phases.

Requirements:

- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Electronics/Telecommunications/Instrumentation Engineering or equivalent.

- 12–18 years of progressive experience in railway or metro Signalling & Telecom projects.

- Minimum of 5 years in a design leadership or equivalent supervisory role within S&T; systems.

- Proven expertise in end-to-end design of S&T; systems, including trackside signalling, train control (ETCS/CTCS), telecom networks, and OCC integration.

- In-depth knowledge of IRS, RDSO, CENELEC, IEC, and other relevant railway safety and technical standards.

- Strong understanding of safety integrity levels (SIL), functional safety (IEC 61508, IEC 61511), and risk assessment methodologies.

- Demonstrated experience in leading design reviews, HAZOP, and safety audits.

- Excellent communication, coordination, and stakeholder management skills across multi-disciplinary teams and external partners.

- Proficiency in industry-standard design tools and software (e.g., AutoCAD, ETAP, MATLAB, Siemens Rail Automation tools, etc.).

- Ability to work in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments while maintaining technical rigor and quality.

- Willingness to travel to project sites and participate in site-based design coordination as required.
