Staff Nurse

Department: Nursing Services
Reports To: Nursing In-Charge / Nursing Supervisor / Chief Nursing Officer (CNO)
Location: Hopewell Hospital, Ranchi
Employment Type: Full-Time (Rotational Shifts)

Position Summary

The Staff Nurse is responsible for providing safe, compassionate, evidence-based nursing care while ensuring an exceptional patient and family experience. The role involves assessment, medication administration, clinical monitoring, documentation, patient education, infection prevention, and coordination with doctors and multidisciplinary teams.

Key Responsibilities1. Patient Care

- Assess patients on admission and during every shift.
- Record vital signs and clinical observations accurately.
- Monitor patient condition and immediately escalate deterioration.
- Prepare patients for investigations, procedures, and surgeries.
- Assist consultants during examinations and bedside procedures.
- Provide pre-operative and post-operative nursing care.
- Ensure patient comfort, dignity, and privacy at all times.
- Support patients in activities of daily living whenever required.

2. Medication Management

- Administer medications as prescribed.
- Follow the "Right Patient, Right Drug, Right Dose, Right Route, Right Time" protocol.
- Double-check high-alert medications.
- Maintain narcotic registers as per hospital policy.
- Report medication errors and near misses immediately.

3. Clinical Procedures

Perform or assist with:

- IV Cannulation
- IV Infusions
- Catheterization
- Ryles Tube insertion (where permitted)
- Wound Dressing
- Tracheostomy Care
- Oxygen Therapy
- Nebulization
- Suctioning
- ECG Recording
- Sample Collection
- Blood Transfusion monitoring
- Drain care
- Pressure sore prevention

4. Documentation

Maintain accurate records of:

- Nursing Notes
- Medication Charts
- Intake & Output
- Vital Charts
- Pain Scores
- Fall Risk Assessment
- Pressure Injury Assessment
- Consent Verification
- Shift Handover Notes
- Nursing Care Plans

Complete all documentation in the Hospital Information Management System (HMIS) before the end of the shift.

5. Infection Prevention & Control

- Follow hand hygiene protocols.
- Adhere to standard and transmission-based precautions.




- Use PPE appropriately.
- Segregate biomedical waste correctly.
- Maintain aseptic techniques.
- Report needle-stick injuries immediately.
- Participate in infection surveillance activities.

6. Patient Experience

- Introduce yourself to every patient.
- Explain procedures before performing them.
- Address patient concerns respectfully.
- Keep patients and relatives informed.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Escalate complaints immediately.
- Promote a calm and reassuring workplace.

7. Emergency Response

Participate in:

- Code Blue
- Code Red
- Code Pink
- CPR
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Advanced Life Support (where trained)
- Mass casualty response
- Disaster drills

8. Equipment Responsibility

Ensure availability and functionality of:

- Monitors
- Syringe Pumps
- Infusion Pumps
- Defibrillator
- Suction Apparatus
- Oxygen Equipment
- Crash Cart
- Glucometer
- Pulse Oximeter

Report equipment malfunction immediately.

9. Communication & Coordination

Coordinate effectively with:

- Consultants
- Resident Doctors
- Physiotherapists
- Dieticians
- Pharmacists
- Laboratory
- Radiology
- Billing Department
- Front Office
- Housekeeping
- Biomedical Engineering

10. Shift Responsibilities

- Attend shift handover.
- Complete bedside handover.
- Verify patient identity.
- Check medication stocks.
- Check emergency trolley.
- Ensure documentation completion.
- Escalate pending investigations.
- Report unresolved issues before leaving duty.

Quality & Safety Responsibilities

- Follow NABH standards.
- Comply with hospital policies.
- Report incidents, near misses, falls, and medication errors.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
- Participate in clinical audits.
- Attend mandatory training programs.
- Maintain nursing competencies.

Digital Responsibilities

- Use HMIS efficiently.
- Complete electronic documentation.
- Barcode medication scanning (where applicable).
- Maintain EMR accuracy.
- Protect patient confidentiality.




- Never share passwords or login credentials.

Qualifications

Essential

- GNM / B.Sc. Nursing
- Valid State Nursing Council Registration

Preferred

- ACLS / BLS Certification
- ICU / OT / Emergency experience
- NABH Hospital experience

Experience

- Freshers may apply.
- 1–5 years preferred.
- Specialty-trained nurses preferred for ICU, OT, Cath Lab, Emergency, and HDU.
